New Authoring tool rankings #11 to #20

eLearning 24-7

Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July. 20 eLab - The user interface is intriguing and enables anyone to build a course, without having the typical “ooh that looks so lame” with some rapid content authoring tools.

Ghost Edition – Top 10 Authoring Tools for 2013

eLearning 24-7

This year we will focus on the top ten authoring tools for 2013. For each authoring ranking, a brief true ghost story, then the vendor and why it was selected. Nice assessment tool. Proof that you can create an amazing authoring tool without being based in the U.S. One of the trends I forsee in 2014 is an increase in the number of authoring tools enabling multilingual while creating a course. Nice tracking feature.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

eLearning 24-7

As the rapid content authoring market continues to grow, new features and capabilities are equally growing. There are 124 authoring tools in my latest directory, of which 30 are SaaS or a combination of desktop and SaaS – which really what is the point of that? Even though more tools are adding the features of collaborative and peer review (more on that in a sec) they are still heavy geared towards a desktop solution. Built in assessment tool, inc.

5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

eLearning 24-7

They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. I have seen continued interest and downloads for open source AR tool kits. Allscripts merged hospital software with an accurate gesture -based system. Kinect technology and gesture free will equally make an appearance in 2012.

My 2012 Enterprise mLearning Predictions Recap

mLearning Trends

As 2012 draws to a close, its time to evaluate how in focus my lens on the future of enterprise mobile learning proved to be this past year and how many of my year ago predictions hit their targets. There will be more types of devices and ways to connect with our mobile learning world in 2012.

#DevLearn retrospective: Start dreaming about the future of eLearning

Challenge to Learn

Thanks to the TinCan API (now renamed into ‘experience API’) the technique is ahead of us (learning developers and vendors). It will be a mutual challenge for the people who are developing this standard, for vendors and for eLearning developers. The vendors.

E-Learning Takeaways

eLearning 24-7

For the rest of us, it isn’t, unless you see the latest takeaways as examples of what is to come or more importantly what hasn’t – which is really a could be doomsday to many vendors – unless they wake up! Authoring Tools. In my newest directory, I have 138 vendors. 11 desktop authoring tools work with Mac OS. 4 desktop authoring tool vendors work with Windows 8. Epic GoMo Authoring tool.

Realizing the Potential of the Tin Can API

Integrated Learnings

Each time a major eLearning authoring tool or LMS vendor announces they are (or will be) supporting the Tin Can API , the eLearning community can be heard giving a simultaneous cheer and moan. Cheers: In the short term, Tin Can support is perceived as a good thing because it means organizations will theoretically have the capability to migrate from SCORM to what's being promoted as a highly improved standard for recording and tracking learning experiences.

Reaction to IMS Learning Impact 2012 Conference

LTI (Learning Tool Interoperability) in particular has cracked the LMS open. The learning tools that were previously only native to the LMS are now are externalized from the LMS, and enabled as cloud-based “tools.” With the ability to easily create learning applications that seamlessly mash-up the best content, and with the tools available, it is no wonder that some innovative vendors have already seized on this new opportunity.

Authoring Tools. Do I need an authoring tool if I have a LMS? Do I need to get an authoring tool that is SCORM or can it just be proprietary? If you want to track in a learning management system or learning platform that supports SCORM then you want it. It’s a product whose core focus is an authoring tool (proprietary based), but offers the ability to add users, provides a few analytics and a few reports. During the past 14.5

Classroom management – attendance tracking is a plus. Built in authoring tool – never hurts. The teachers I know, do not have several hundred or even a thousand dollars around to purchase a 3rd party authoring tool. Assessment tool.

Halftime! LMS trends though July

Here are just a couple: Pricing is typically higher to have you (consumer/company) on your own servers than “in the cloud” The Perpetual license isn’t that awesome, IMO, because unless you actually own the system yourself, rather than leasing it (which is what everyone does under the term “buying” it), than I see no point, especially in 2012. SaaS and LMS vendors. I now pronounce you Authoring Tool and LMS, you may now integrate/interface.

Enterprise mLearning Predictions for 2012

mLearning Trends

Here on the last day of the year, I offer my predications for the big and shaping trends we’ll see in the enterprise mobile learning space for 2012. There will be more types of devices and ways to connect with our mobile learning world in 2012. We also think hybrid apps that mix the best of native apps and mobile web apps will have a bigger impact on enterprise mobile learning thoroughout 2012 than just pure mobile web apps for that same market. Happy New Year 2012!

Content Authoring Tools (often referred to as “Rapid Content Authoring Tools (RCAT). Simulation tools (can be in a CAT or RCAT, but also can be a standalone). think tracking!). Some vendors offer both options.

xAPI Camp – DevLearn 2015 is ONE DAY AWAY

MakingBetter

The Guild helped us launch xAPI at mLearnCon back in 2012 and they have been a steadfast supporter of xAPI. Last year was the first year there was an official xAPI Track at DevLearn and, together, we are upping that ante again (…in Vegas). Riptide Software has been a big supporter of every xAPI Camp with really compelling cases studies and incredible enthusiasm over the mission of getting people into the conversations they need to have around xAPI.

Second, Rustici Software recently announced the launching of the eLearning Atlas–Below is the press release. For example, a Director of Technology needs an authoring tool that supports SCORM 2004 3rd Edition for their LMS. Current state of Gamification in the LMS Market

eLearning 24-7

40 vendors had at least three gamification features (8 of them had at least four features). Several vendors offered the ability for admin (clients) to upload their own badge. You do not need a built-in authoring tool to do this. Blue Volt was doing this back in the late 2000’s and still do it – tied to a gift card reward program; other vendors are jumping on as well (with more in 2015, but really really tiny numbers). LMS vendors on warp drive.

Mobile to Me is not necessarily M-Learning to you (from the vendors’ perspective). Mobile is still on the rise, with more vendors (LMS, authoring tools, assessment, e-learning tools, etc.) If I wasn’t fully aware of the whole “mobile spin”, I’d naturally think that what is being said is that the vendor has some type of app (native/HTML5) which is available and when used it goes to their solution. 2012 to Jan.

K-12 and LMSs are Broken, Who’s to Blame?

eLearning 24-7

The problem though is that there is a crisis going on in the K-12 sector and it is tied in part to e-learning (with wins and losses) and LMS vendors who serve that sector. and K-12 LMS vendors (a chunk of them). But for this article the focus will be on those school districts and K-12 LMS vendors (many who are lost in really “getting it”). Possibly three parties in the rest of the world – Schools, some Governments, and a nice slice of K-12 LMS vendors.
