The past tense of open badges

E-Learning Provocateur

Some commentators are heralding open badges as the nemesis of the college degree. As Mark Smithers observes… “It’s interesting that the reaction to open badges from senior academic managers is often to dismiss them as being child like and akin to collecting a badge for sewing at scouts.” Of course, open badges and college degrees are not mutually exclusive. In contrast, open badges are task oriented.

10 resources I enjoyed in February 2013

Jane Hart

Although I tweet links to interesting resources as I find them, and collate them in my 2013 Reading List , the important thing for me about curation is also taking some time to analyse what I’ve found to try and make sense of it all, and consider how it adds to my own thinking and practice. So here is my selection from February 2013. Here are a couple of snippets from two others I found useful reading: Working from home , Nigel Paine, 27 February 2013.

Given that I do still retain a very active presence in virtual worlds and that includes Second Life and Open Simulator, it was a shame that these did not seem to be in evidence. Made my way to the BETT show and first time at Excel center for me anyway, even bumped into a couple of people I knew there, had a catch-up, always good. A great deal to see in a day, and I was impressed by the turn out of resources particularly for robotics and science, very impressive, very encouraging.

MOOCs: Where We’ve Been, Where We Are, and Where We’re Headed

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have rocked the world of education probably faster than any other innovation in history. Several pundits and observers have noted that MOOCs are following the Gartner hype cycle for emerging technologies, and most agree that we are now somewhere between the “trough of disillusionment” and the “slope of enlightenment,” on our way to the “plateau of productivity.”. Consequently, the course was based on open educational resources and peer learning.

The #1 WordPress LMS Myth BUSTED

New MOOC Models: Blended Learning

Your Training Edge

New technologies emerge, they disrupt the status quo, and then, inevitably, they change. This is exactly what has happened with massive open online courses (MOOCs). SPOCs are like MOOCs in that they use video lectures, discussion boards, machine-graded assessments, and other MOOC elements, but they are unlike MOOCs in that they are open only to students enrolled at their respective schools (and in Harvard’s case up to 500 additional participants).

Colorful Consulting: Lessons from Larry

Just when I think I am ready to let the gray emerge, I pass a mirror and recognize my grandmother out of the corner of my eye. He asked questions I couldn’t answer, leaving the door open for me to do some research on my own. Today I learned about consulting from a surprising source. It began at lunch yesterday, when my usually positive pal Ellie remarked that my hair wasn’t looking so great. I think the word she used was listless. The cut was fine. But she wondered about the color.
