Since my Top 10 list of LMS vendors has been posted online, I have received quite a bit of e-mail wondering why the biggest names: Cornerstone On Demand, Saba, SumTotal and SuccessFactors are not on the list. “While the pricing is outrageous and the Saba as a whole seems better suited as a HCM, their learning suite is a better alternative than those who want Cornerstone OnDemand.” I have some real concerns on what is taking place with Saba today.

Q : I am curious on why Cornerstone On Demand, Saba and SumTotal do not appear in your top twenty lists even though they appear on other sites as the best products in the market. Saba - A solid system, but IMO (in my opinion) better suited for talent/performance management. It used to be that people would mention CoD, SumTotal and Saba when they were looking at those three platforms – at least to me they would – but nowadays, I don’t hear that.

It enables you to look back and see the triumphs, the disappointments, the good and the bad. Many people look back and are amazed. Others look back and say “What if I did that” or “What if…” It is always a half full/half empty experience. Thankfully, rather than just one person looking back and seeing what happened, we can all do so. .

Part of the confusion is the usage of the term “traditional”, whereas I think that people who use that term are focusing on vendors such as Cornerstone or Saba, for example, and assuming that all vendors are like them. One of the hottest markets, starting in 2013 and expanding in 2014, are content providers who need a LMS to sell their own content, whether it is for their clients B2B or in some cases B2C direct.

For this year’s forecasts, I reviewed and analyzed the data – not only for 2014, but 2013 too. These vendors include ExpertusOne and Saba (and there are other vendors out there too). In the case of Saba for example, their predictive includes the ability for the learner to add their own skills, which in theory would make that predictive better attuned for that specific learner.

In fact, each of the “Four Horsemen” who rule the enterprise – namely SumTotal , Saba , Plateau & Geolearning – gave it a go in some way although no one outside their immediate customers or PR agencies seemed to notice. Indeed, HTML5 does hold great long-term promise but the specification is still very much a work in progress (due to be ratified in 2013) and only a reasonable few (read: newer, more expensive) mobile devices fully support the spec as written in today’s program.
