Cast your mind back: what was your new year’s resolution? Mine – to read more on the bus to work - is such a distant memory, I had abandoned it by the end of January. It didn’t seem too ambitious at the time, but it turned out it was. I wanted to read, I know how to … but somehow every time I got on the bus it was easier to plug into a podcast. I don’t outline this to show you what a mindless smartphone slave I am, just to illustrate the obvious point that knowing how to do something is not the

Artificial intelligence (AI) has never been bigger news. From the drama of Westworld on our TV screens (spoiler alert – the robots don’t like us much) to the front pages of our newspapers, AI is demonised and championed alike. Is Alexa cackling away as she plots how to overthrow her human overlords? Will the robots take our jobs ? Or maybe, just maybe, could they help us?

For the last few years, Big Data has been recognized as a valuable resource across many industries. The elearning industry has historically been interested in consumption data, like user completion rates and time spent in a course. However, our industry, like others, is expanding the role and use of data, especially data that is more readily available.

If you’ve ever invested countless hours preparing a one-hour corporate training or 30-minute management webinar, you know how frustrating it can be to have your attendees retain very little. Even though you spent considerable time in making the event lively or the webinar interactive, attendees can still struggle to retain what was covered. While forgetting depends on many factors, research shows that, on average, students forget 70 percent of what was taught within 24 hours of the training exp

For a while now there has been ‘chat’ about social learning as an approach to workplace L&D. There’s also a suspicion that woven into this catchphrase was some expectation around social platforms, social media and the like - and perhaps an unspoken assumption that it offers a cheap solution to the training challenge.

One thing we spotted in the interviews for this year’s Learning Insights report was a shift in the way we’re all talking about social learning. No longer a buzzword, it’s now understood – and desired - that our learners will naturally learn from each other. And that we can help that happen.

Visuals don’t just add intrigue and excitement to learning, they also serve a valuable role in terms of memory and retention of content, as well as aiding navigation. Designers use layouts, typography and font changes to emphasis key points and draw out important messages. By demonstrating the hierarchy of content, visuals can be used to create a sense of order and establish links between ideas. .

Back in 2005, when the Scissor Sisters were riding high in the album charts, Shrek 2 was packing out cinemas and Hurricane Katrina was wreaking havoc on America’s Gulf Coast, Flash software was installed on 98% of computers. Fast forward to 2017 and the once-pioneering technology responsible for powering multimedia content is soon to be no more. Flash is now only installed on 17% of computers and Adobe have officially announced that it will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the

The elearning industry historically has had a habit of putting the cart before the horse. For years everyone was saying they wanted to talk about mobile – but there were no users willing or able to use mobile devices for learning. Gamification has also been talked about for a long time, without anybody even being clear what they mean by it, let alone being able to point to examples of it being used in a corporate learning context.

As an L&D professional, you’re probably familiar with the concept of evaluating your learning courses and modules to ensure that you’re providing a value to the organization. However, since research shows that the most important aspects of learning transfer happen before and after the training, and not during the training, as one would reasonably expect, that means it’s time to shift gears and focus on refining your pre and post-course methodologies.

As digital learning continues to evolve, many people have begun to wonder how L&D professionals will step up their systems and begin including more robust options for integrations, tracking, and reporting. Fortunately, over the last few years Experience API, or xAPI, has been developed and is lending a hand in creating a more powerful dynamic between learning platforms and reporting mechanisms.

For many companies, the most pressing goal when designing onboarding experiences is to get new hires trained on their job and company procedures as quickly as possible so they can hit the ground running. From the employee perspective, however, this approach may not align to what they really need and want. Of course, new employees want to learn how to do their jobs and do them well.

Apps like Snapchat, with its facial filters, and the Pokemon Go! game made AR a reality for the masses, but Apple’s ARKit goes way beyond that. Developers can now create AR experiences that offer a whole different level of precision, detail and interactivity - which, I feel is going to be HUGE.

Compliance training. No one particularly loves it - not even the legal department - but there’s virtually no way to avoid it. In most industries, if an organization or its employees aren’t in compliance, some pretty nasty consequences can arise should a law be violated or regulation ignored. And let’s be honest, compliance content isn’t by nature the most entertaining information to learn.

As with any profession, working in L&D has its unique challenges. The elearning industry is an ever-changing one, and since our founding in 2005 we’ve worked to help move it forward and stay on the cutting edge. However, as more organizations embrace elearning and cultivate unique, holistic learning experiences in general, it’s important to take a look at what it means to be a good L&D professional.

As with pretty much every project, learning solutions can often have some serious design constraints you’ll need to work with. After all, very few organizations have unlimited resources and budgets, or employees with time to do their jobs and the flexibility to spend hours exploring an immersive and intensive elearning experience. That said, constraints on the design process should be looked at as challenges to overcome, rather than obstacles that stand in the way of progress.

When you think of the mother of all Learning Management Systems, 24 cardboard boxes tucked away at a Minnesota library probably doesn't come to mind. Yet that is the home of PLATO, the first computer-based learning system and online community. Many LMSs today are born out of the same basic concepts that Donald Bitzer developed for PLATO in 1960. We’ve come a long way since then.

How do you know how to budget and plan for digital learning? For some time the industry has priced elearning by the hour – a course of 20 hours will cost more than one that’s just 20 minutes. What's not to like about Google Analytics. You can learn so much from dipping into the data about how the content we produce is used. As well as showing us where things can be improved, the data shines a light on missed opportunities, the greatest of which, is how few people are consuming learning content on smartphones.
