EPISODE 76: AI in Microlearning

Vlad Grigoriu - Co-Founder and CEO - Code of Talent

Vlad Grigoriu, Co-Founder and CEO, Code of Talent

Lately, it seems we hear about new, innovative uses of artificial intelligence nearly every day. Clearly, AI and automation are transforming learning processes in numerous ways. But what about AI in microlearning?

To help explore this topic, I’ve invited a microlearning technology pioneer to join me for today’s episode of The Talented Learning Show.

If you’re not yet familiar with Vlad Grigoriu, Co-Founder and CEO at Code of Talent, I predict you soon will be. That’s because he and his team have been busy developing a truly impressive platform that creates and delivers AI-driven microlearning experiences in a fraction of the time and effort you might expect. To find out how it works, read on…

AI in Microlearning – KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • For decades, those of us in instructional design and development approached our discipline as a complex, costly and time-consuming process. But AI in microlearning is rapidly turning that reality on its head. AI-based tools now make it remarkably fast and easy to create highly effective microlearning experiences.
  • Microlearning platforms aren’t designed to take on all the functions of an LMS. Instead, they work side-by-side with learning platforms to deliver learning experiences that are available in a series of short “chunks” that are easier for people to consume, especially when they’re on-the-go.
  • AI in microlearning is not just about developing and delivering more engaging content faster. It also improves learning impact by improving individual and business performance.

AI in Microlearning – Q&A HIGHLIGHTS

Welcome, Vlad. Since your company is relatively new, could you give us a brief introduction?

Yes, that’s a good way to start John. Code of Talent is an AI-powered microlearning solution with a mission to revolutionize corporate learning. And we do that by making learning exceptionally easy, engaging and effective.

We do this with AI capabilities for content authoring and customization that ensure learning experiences are highly relevant to the knowledge and skills every learner needs to help them on the job.

In fact, we believe so strongly in personalization and relevance that none of the courses we offer are off-the-shelf. Every course is created 100% by our customer in a tailored manner.

Interesting. So where does microlearning fit in here?

Well, microlearning involves delivery of instructional content in bite-sized chunks that are easy to digest and understand. It also has two other key characteristics. Think of it as both multi-device and multimedia:

  • Multi-device indicates that access from all devices is important. But mobile devices are central, because this is about convenience. It’s often used on the go.
  • Multimedia means the content is typically visual because it’s more condensed.

We always think of microlearning within the flow of work or in the flow of life. Because people usually consume it on-the-go.

Mmhmm…

So, diving into the benefits of microlearning, I would say it is not just a buzzword. It’s a proper learning methodology that is here to stay. Here’s why:

Learning in 3-7 minute chunks aligns with the attention span and working memory of the modern learner’s brain. This is why microlearning needs to be more visual and interactive.

Makes sense…

We also have a lot of research data underscoring the value of microlearning For example, about 80% of learning and development professionals tend to favor microlearning because their learners love it.

In addition, microlearning is highly efficient to develop, compared with traditional elearning courses or lengthy classroom experiences. For example, the development process can be up to 300% faster. And some studies say it can also cut development time and cost in half.

Also, microlearning engagement is substantially higher, because it is more interactive and often gamified. So it’s not the boring, repetitive kind of learning experience we unfortunately often see in traditional learning environments.

So, let’s talk about how this works. Say you have an hour of traditional content. Do you just chunk that into smaller pieces? Or to be effective, do you reduce the content?

Both. If you have one hour of content, you could break it up into smaller bite-sized learning pieces that are distributed across a 2-day learning journey. But a microlearning experience is not just transforming content into chunks. It’s also about the form of the interaction and the way content is delivered.

For example, we’ve researched and designed about a dozen different types of microlearning experiences. So you could have a 3-minute chunk of content that is an application-focused task. Or it could be a question, a poll, or an idea-generation type of learning experience. It could be a quiz, a micro-assessment, or a more comprehensive survey. It could be a peer exercise, or a scenario where you upload a video sharing your experience or feedback from a customer. There are many possibilities, depending upon the context, needs, and goals.

Ahhh…

So it’s not just about breaking an hour of content into smaller chunks. It’s about reengineering the entire learning experience to fit in with the way modern learners acquire and apply information and knowledge.

This is really the Code of Talent promise. It’s about transforming knowing into doing. It’s about improving performance. For us, that’s the essence of microlearning.

Excellent. So the length and the learning strategies are different. So is microlearning appropriate for all learning needs, or only certain applications?

Beyond a doubt, the most effective experience blends human face-to-face interaction with digital microlearning. But the way it is blended can take multiple forms.

For instance, it could be multiple face-to-face interventions and sessions combined with digital learning experiences. But between the face-to-face experiences, you could focus on application of that knowledge.

It all depends on the vision, the type of content, the depth of the particular content, and the strategic importance of the program.

It sounds like creating this kind of experience is a lot of work from a content authoring perspective…

Yes, it usually is. But our platform is built around artificial intelligence. All the quantitative and qualitative logic needed to restructure all these different microlearning missions into different types of experiences is embedded in the Code of Talent AI engine. So, it can produce a full, ready-to-go microlearning program in only a couple of minutes.

Of course, it really depends on the content. But everything is 100% customized for the company, the department, the job function, the learner KPIs and the delivery environment…

Wow. So with your approach to AI in microlearning, an author doesn’t necessarily need to know the content? The AI engine basically can build it all?…
