An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). Here is just a few of ones I like, that are unique and you could use in your LMS/LCMS/CMS, Learning Portal (caveat: your vendor must be able to accept APIs, otherwise it won’t work). Mashups. Plateau LMS is a Talent Management System, made up of four modules. After logging into the system a pop up window appears with four option, under the title “How to Get the Most out of the Plateau TMS. You can click a check box, if you do not want the pop-up to appear the next time you log into the system. However the system will show the pop up box if their is new content. What has been applying is the term mobile learning and how it it pitched to consumers in the e-learning sector, especially with LMS/LCMS/Learning platform vendors. A few systems pitch that they have full mobile learning capability, especially with the iPad including the angle that you can see it full screen rather than the standard universal look – which shows up similar to the smartphone look – i.e. small. If you as the customer want to create your own API/Mashup or find one on the net and want to integrate it into your paid LMS, the vendor will charge you. As I have said before, mobile learning and tablets is going to end up being the biggest thing in the last 10 years in the e-learning industry. These trends and a few others are starting to peek up, and will continue to do so. In my LMS directory (which includes LCMS, Learning Portals) there are 369 vendors.
