I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. In addition, she indicates if they are free or cost money – which is not quite the same thing as open source. Beyond that, probably the best thing to do is to use eLearning Learning to go through it’s open source eLearning and open source eLearning Tools.

You can either have all open, which many companies do not want, or are stuck with course keys and other additional non-necessary steps. Systems (LMS (sometimes people call it a portal), LCMS, CMS, Traning Mgt or Online Authoring, Platform) – Talent mgt systems are starting to enter as well, but as a whole they are still a standalone away from e-learning. Personally, I think a LCMS is hanging by its toenails on a cliff. Option for some people: going open source (which has pros, but honestly has a lot of cons).
