ToolBook authoring tool - this is the DHTML authoring tool used at my company, but prior to this I used TrainerSoft (now Outstart Trainer), which is my preference. Sumtotal LCMS - already determined by the company I work for, but no complaints. Here is what I have in my e-learning toolbox and some notes on how I use these tools.

The next generation of authoring tools included a handful of really serious players, notably Authorware (now with Adobe) and Toolbook (now with SumTotal), both still going although not so strongly. Of course these all came and went as PCs gradually dominated the market for hardware and Windows took hold.

I will be dating myself here, but so much of the orthodoxy in the instructional design process was forged back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when the only Computer-Based Training (CBT) tools were Toolbook for the PC, and Hypercard for the Mac. Due to the technical constraints it became a law that “pages must not scroll”.

When I was looking at a LMS/LCMS vendors in the last few years, one of my first questions, “Are you SCORM 2004 or 1.2 RCATs who do not offer multiple outputs – say to the web, other media and of course a LMS/LCMS – it is amazing, how many do not offer an output to the web, but offer it to a LMS/LCMS.
