What’s the Difference Between an LMS and an LCMS? Hint: It’s Not Just the Letter “C”

Association eLearning

For example, you’ve likely seen Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) discussed on various websites and company pages. How is an LCMS Different from an LMS? An LCMS goes one step farther. In addition to everything an LMS does, an LCMS also lets you create learning content (courses, lessons, modules, etc.). In short, with an LCMS you get all the features of an LMS plus the added benefits of a Content Management System (CMS).

How Not to Adopt an LCMS

Xyleme

Today’s modern learning ecosystem demands a learning content management system (LCMS) that allows organizations to: Deliver a Better Experience. Companies that adopt a new LCMS are challenging the status quo, reimagining the way content is typically authored, created and delivered. Here are some of the most common mistakes organizations make when adopting a new LCMS: Trying to shoe-horn existing process into a new system. Actively communicate with your vendor.

LCMS - Warehouse and Authoring

Tony Karrer

I’ve received some good feedback on my post Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) for Managing Course Assets. One thing is pretty clear, LCMS tools have really headed towards a kind of super Authoring tool and there's a related but quite distinct need for support for a Warehouse. In terms of use of traditional LCMS products towards the needs cited in the previous post, Brenda Robinson and I had a good "discussion" around this - email exchange.

You may have seen or heard terms relating to learning management, like LMS or LCMS, or content management. To begin with, an LMS is a Learning Management System, while and LCMS is a Learning Content Management System. The three types of learning technology I’m most frequently asked about are learning management systems (LMS), learning content management systems (LCMS), and learning record stores (LRS). Some learning management systems have features or add-ons that would traditionally be classified as functions of a learning content management system (LCMS) or content management system (CMS). Learning technology is constantly changing.

A Learning Content Management System (LCMS) typically is an LMS to which the LMS vendor has added an authoring tool. The LCMS can be used to incorporate and structure content from all sources into courses, as long as the type of content is supported by the LMS.

LMS/LCMS Puzzlers

eLearning 24-7

Just some thoughts that puzzle me on why some LMS/LCMS vendors (okay over 98% of them) are still in some time warp from the Eighties when it comes time to enhance their services and technological solutions. So why do vendors refuse to do this? Unfortunately, we do not have that luxury when buying YOUR LMS/LCMS. Hmm, we are in a global marketplace, so why are a large number of vendors still believing that everyone is on EST?

Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

Vendors who have partnerships with WebEx or whomever they use, typically require you to purchase a license, which is separate from the system. Many will offer or have the ability to purchase the license for you, rather than you having to go to the vendor themselves and purchase it. Rather, “partner&# is a dual revenue steam for the vendor and their partner – a business relationship deal. If the vendor offers it, they say yes – but here is the twist.

Just as a seriously doubt many of the LMS vendors who feel it is their duty to charge one time setup fees that break your budget bank. There are plenty of vendors who do not charge any type of setup fee. Equally there are vendors who charge a setup fee for items that you need to make it go. You can buy extra training – on site for x number of days – which can be a major profit maker for a vendor. I know of vendors who charge 3K per API.
