The Adobe Captivate team has been busy blogging about the new features in Captivate 4. Following is a quick list of their most recent posts:-
- Variables: Simple Usage. “One of the new features added in Adobe Captivate 4 was Variables and Scripting. In this blog post we will try to understand some simple usages of Variables.”
- Authoring – limited by your creativity not the tool. “Captivate users – do you sometimes feel that we were cramping your style and limiting your creativity?”
- Silent Install for Captivate 4. “Just a quick note about installing Captivate 4 in silent mode (or from command line).”
- Creating large modular projects using Captivate 4. “Large eLearning projects are always difficult to maintain and the authoring process is inefficient because of lack of parallelism and collaboration.”
- _root issue in Adobe Captivate. “SWF movie created using Raptivity uses _root inside its ActionScript. In most cases, SWFs referring to _root do not work inside any container that loads the SWF.”
The Adobe Captivate team are doing a great job keeping us up to date with the latest Captivate news. Thanks guys!
Hi Steve,
I have a bit of a situation here. I have been developing the content for an eLearning course and I have passed it on to the developer. She is new to Adobe Captivate and I have not used the software myself. She is telling me that I cannot have my learners move between modules without completing a quiz first. Is this true? Is there any way around this?
I hope you can help me. I have been searching the net high and low for an answer… if only I had access to the software, I’d figure it out myself…
Thanks
Jen
Hi Jen,
the quick answer is that you can jump to another course simply by choosing that option as the result of
Finishing the course
Clicking a button
Clicking a click box
Finishing a page
And probably as a result of other things too.
Unfortunately a ug has surfaced in Captivate 4 that means this might not work. But fear not, there’s another way. You can use the Aggregator to collect together several lessons and the Aggregator acts as a menuing system for jumping between them.
One more thing to think about. If your course is delivered to an LMS, then SCORM dictates that you use the in-built menuing system of the LMS to navigate from one lesson to the next. Put another way, SCORM requires that you close one lesson before launching the next from within the LMS. But this does not require that you also include a quiz. There is no circumstance that I am familiar with that forces you to use a quiz in order to be able to jump from one lesson to another.
If you do not want to track the module completions separately, you can always insert a button and on the button properties choose if the user clicks on the button, it will open a new project.
Also, another tip about linking – if you use click buttons you should type the name of the file in the URL area and not the path, then make sure the file is included in your zip file or folder before publishing to an LMS.
All good points, Christina. Just remember that these tips are only recommended if you are *not* using an LMS, because the LMS will only be able to track the first lesson you launch.
I am writing because I have been trying to use Raptivity in Cap 4, but despite working with their technical support (and extensive online research), have not found a solution. I get a message about a “root error” when I embed their swfs. Then the only slides that will play are those positioned after their animation; none of the slides before it play. I’ve insert their “fix.swf” and, following their instructions, even went through the process of creating a loader shell in flash (and I’m not a flash developer) all to no avail.
All this to ask you, are you aware of anyone successfully using Raptivity in Cap 4? If you are, I’d like to know their secret.
I don’t use Raptivity, and I don’t know of anyone offhand who does. Sorry.
I’m guessing the root error is in the Raptivity code, where it incorrectly references _root. They should be able to fix their own code by removing _root references or utilising lockRoot.
