While working on rapid authored courses (courses authored using rapid authoring tools), I often encounter the decision point of whether to use freeform rapid authoring tools or the traditional template-based tools. First, let’s look at template-based tools. Udutu is one of such tool which uses templates for authoring.

This is immensely helpful when you create multilingual courses. While implementing compliance standards you could ask for the implementation guide for the LMS and course interaction to understand if the LMS follows standard SCORM or AICC features or it’s a customized one and update the player accordingly. No support for AS 3.0

You’d no longer need to learn specialized skills like Flash and ActionScript. Back then I even used a hidden notes panel to create a simple learning management system where a person searched their name and the courses they need to take showed up in the menu. They do some customization using JavaScript and other hacks.

And with that I get to see some of the ridiculous checklists that some IT groups create to compare software. Usually they place more value on number of features (regardless of their real value) than on how those features are used to create the online courses. This creates a lot of extra work and can be frustrating.
