Is HTML5 Ready for eLearning Development?

Upside Learning

Last week, while justifying Apple’s refusal to allow Flash player on iPhone/iPad, Steve Jobs wrote– “ New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too) ”. A few days before the launch of iPad Apple had released a list of ‘iPad ready’ websites having support for HTML5. Yes, HTML5 is a major revision over its predecessor HTML4. More specifically- Is it ready to compete with Flash for eLearning Development?

Drawbacks of Flash: How Articulate Storyline Can Help

CommLab India

The trouble is that most Smartphones and tablet PCs do not support Flash , which makes Flash-based courses archaic. Today, many tools are available which give you Flash-like output, ones that lessen the complexities of Flash – requiring developers to have technical knowledge to create interactive elements, consuming a lot of time and most importantly, money. Today, let’s see how Articulate Storyline improves upon Flash and its drawbacks. And Flash is (was?)

How to Get Lectora Game Templates to Send Score Results to Your LMS

eLearning Brothers

To give the Flash score to Lectora’s AICC_Score variable, both the Lectora and Flash files need to be modified to ‘talk’ to each other. The Lectora page needs to have a new variable declared on the page, and Flash needs to have the correct “ExternalInterface.call” setup in ActionScript. Let’s start with a Lectora variable, in this case I called it “Tempscore” and I’ll use it to capture the Flash score. Now for the Flash.

I’m not just talking about the two big programming languages, HTML and Flash. Mark works with and trains javascript, PERL, XML, CSS, PHP/MySQL, and the new and somewhat talked about HTML5. Right now we have three courses available– HTML and CSS for Beginners (Including HTML5!), Actionscript has been around as long as Flash has. At DevLearn one vendor told me that with his tool, “I wouldn’t have to write Actionscript any more!”

Apple Vs Adobe: Impact On Mobile Learning Development

Upside Learning

Apple has revised the Developer Program License Agreement to ban the use of cross compiler tools like Unity3d, Appcelerator’s Titanium, Adobe’s Flash CS5 etc. Industry experts believe that Apple has done this solely to block the new feature of Adobe Flash that will allow the Flash developers to publish Flash files to iPhone app without any knowledge of iPhone SDK or Objective-C. Using Adobe Animate in Captivate Slides

Adobe Captivate

Although flash is for all intents and purposes done – it’s good to see that those of us who have worked with the Adobe Flash application in the past can transfer our skills to creating html5 output in Adobe Animate. Rather than ActionScript programming control will come by the use of Javascript, then publishing to.oam format and ultimately bring the content into Captivate to create animated or interactive content.

Mobile Learning Moves the Evolution of Authoring Tools

Association eLearning

To combat “boring” eLearning experiences, programs like Adobe Flash and Director came on the scene with an animated bang (anyone else remember the bird crash vector animation from the early Flash demos?) eLearning created with these tools became engaging again, and though these applications did not require the kind of command-line coding expertise that TenCORE did, Actionscript (for Flash ) and Lingo (for Director ) could not be described as “simple” to use.

Converting ELearning To Tablet Learning: Cost-effective Solutions

Upside Learning

Flash animations can be published as videos and imported in the HTML/Lectora framework. This method allows the previously developed Flash animations to be reutilized, leading to sizeable cost-savings. Another option could be to use the Flash CS6 Toolkit for CreateJS , which allows output to be created in Flash and published for HTML. This tool has a very good feature (HTML5 tracker) for highlighting activities that are not supported on tablets.

E-learning Tools: A Developer’s Review of Adobe Captivate 7

SweetRush

It cannot compete with Adobe Flash or other platforms based on programming languages. Captivate 7 is a rapid development tool, so it’s never going to compare to something like ActionScript® when it comes to custom programming. All this can be published to Flash® or to HTML5, ready for mobile use. The HTML5 conversion is yet to fully mature, which is true not just for Captivate, but for most of its competitors.

Exploring the future of learning in 2024 – #LRN2024

NuggetHead

A fairly bold statement, but there are skills I’ve learned that didn’t exist a decade ago (HTML5, app development, etc.). For example: HTML5 has flipped the elearning industry on its head. Those who were masterful ActionScript (Flash) programmers found themselves with an obsolete skillset due to not only the changes in mobile technology, but a consumer market that demanded mobile content.

What Tools Should We Learn?

3, Interactions/Animations/Games I don’t want to get into the Flash debate here but let’s face it; the.swf output file is here to stay for a long time. You can sit around and wait for who wins the HTML5 argument or you can learn Flash. Other than HTML, at a minimum I recommend learning XML, basic JavaScript (Web) and basic ActionScript (Flash).
