Book review: Leaving ADDIE for SAM: will agile eLearning development become mainstream?

Challenge to Learn

Michael and Richard present us an agile alternative for ADDIE: SAM (Successive Approximation Model). It is followed by an analysis of ADDIE, looking at its original form and some new manifestations. Their conclusion is: ADDIE falls short, we need something else (and I agree). A post that I wrote for the ASTD’s big question blog on agile development.

ADDIE isn't dead; how can it be?

Integrated Learnings

There has been a lot of discussion, and an infamous article or two, in our field about the death of the ADDIE model. As a reminder, ADDIE stands for Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. And if the attacks are based on the long timelines typically associated with ADDIE, then they make some valid points. And models such as ADDIE help us do so. ADDIE is the basic backbone of our processes. So what are your views on ADDIE? By Jay Lambert.

If Not ADDIE, Then What with Michael Allen #astdtk13

Learning Visions

I'm at the ASTD Tech Knowledge 2013 Conference kicking off today January 29, 2013 in San Jose, California. ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) – it just wasn’t good enough for him. He used to teach ADDIE with confidence. ADDIE’s origins – by the armed services when they needed a cookbook to create a lot of instruction fast by people without a lot of instructional knowledge. Over time, he has evolved ADDIE into Successive Approximation. Kineo.

A Conversation with Michael Allen–ADDIE, SAM & the Future of ID

Kapp Notes

He is the author of seven book including a best-seller on creating effective e-learning and in has received ASTD’s Distinguished Contribution to Workplace Learning and Performance Award in 2011. Michael Allen and I sit down and discuss the Zebra program at ASTD conference way back in 2011. Apparently the book has stirred a little controversy around the topic of ADDIE. So my first question is “what’s wrong with ADDIE?”. Much simpler, more effective, and faster.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: ADDIE: Its a Process

Learning Visions

Friday, June 15, 2007 ADDIE: Its a Process This is probably an argument made in any Instructional Design 101 class; I dont think Im saying anything new here. A common one is ADDIE - Analysis-Design-Development-Implementation-Evaluation.) I dont think ADDIE and Gagne are really in the same class. I disagree that ADDIE is an instructional design model. Theres nothing in ADDIE about learning objects or the presentation of information.

Monday, June 18, 2007 Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking From the Eide Neurolearning Blog: Voluntary Control of Attention - Visual and Auditory Multi-Tasking There is a yin and yang effect between visual and auditory attention. Mixed visual-auditory stimuli have an underadditive effect, so that if you have to do both at the same time, total brain activation goes down. Maybe the "underadditive effect" occurs when a multimedia presentation does all the thinking for you.

ADDIE), but rather the teaching tools themselves. Things might get a bit silly with all that snapping, but I bet its effective. Online courses provide ample opportunities to creatively and repeatedly introduce learners to concepts through the subtle, yet effective, use of graphics and/or audio. I think this is a really useful technique, especially when youve got an effective graphic (think branding) to expose your learner to again and again.

We Need a Degree in Instructional Design

Kapp Notes

The cost of "trial and error experimentation" while a non-degreed designer figures out how to design effective instruction within an organization is too high a price for the field to pay. I think people believe that if they understand ADDIE then they understand Instructional Design and so they don't need a degree. Additionally, the goal of instructional design (and this part addresses ASTD's January Big Question ) is to change behavior or attitude.
