Looking Back on 2010 with ADDIE

Integrated Learnings

Though a variety of models guide our instructional design work, I’d argue that ADDIE functions as the basic backbone of the process. Just about every model, trend, and best practice in the field supports one of the phases of ADDIE. So with this in mind, it seems appropriate to take a look at the articles posted to this blog over the past year and organize them according to how they jive with ADDIE. But do you ever get overwhelmed when you open up your authoring tool and stare at that blank screen? The ADDIE Model is a long-term, proven model and provides a great starting point. Storyboards are essential to get buy in from the client before actually programming a course in Lectora® e-Learning software. And it’s a lot easier to make major course changes in PowerPoint than a finished Lectora file that you’re ready to publish.

GAMIFICATION – PLAYING AT (NOT) LEARNING

Wonderful Brain

In any learning environment, this is the common process applied, whether called A.D.D.I.E. Off the shelf products, e.g. Articulate, Captivate, Camtasia, Lectora, and other rapid authoring tools support basic interactions but are somewhat superficial given the need to employ these in a variety of environments. When I first heard the term ‘gamification’* I had the sensation of a spider wiggling down my shirt at a picnic.

How to Create an Online Course

Courses are most effectively designed when a strong LMS is employed, alongside a good authoring tool. The authoring tool is responsible for instructional design without actually employing an instructional designer. An effective and worthwhile authoring tool to invest in will provide users with a plethora of unique features for optimal content creation success. Good authoring tools like these import your content into the course in their most optimal form.

2008 Prediction #3 => Authoring Tools - Captivate and Articulate Will Dominate It rhymes and it's an easy prediction that these two tools will dominate authoring. Interestingly, they both were originally considered rapid authoring tools but now are becoming THE authoring tools. Wiki + SCORM + Add-ins will become more common for easy authoring. Not sure that the emergence of Wiki Course Authoring really translated into adoption.
