ADDIE isn't dead; how can it be?

Integrated Learnings

There has been a lot of discussion, and an infamous article or two, in our field about the death of the ADDIE model. As a reminder, ADDIE stands for Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate. And if the attacks are based on the long timelines typically associated with ADDIE, then they make some valid points. Most of us have seen business sponsors' eyes glaze over when full project plans are introduced. And models such as ADDIE help us do so.

Deeper eLearning Design: Part 1 – The Starting Point: Good Objectives

Learnnovators

Once we get the objective, we can start following a design process such as ADDIE or SAM, but to assume we’re ready to design a learning experience when we receive a request for a course is a mistake. When there are performance gaps in organizations, there could be several possible reasons: that the performer doesn’t have access to the necessary resources, that the performer isn’t motivated or is motivated to perform in other ways, or that the performer is lacking in particular skills.

The Big Question for November - Future of ISD / ADDIE / HPT?

Tony Karrer

The question this month is: Are ISD / ADDIE / HPT relevant in a world of rapid elearning, faster time-to-performance, and informal learning? What you have to ask yourself is: What business are you in? Are you in the business of creating linear learning experiences? Our job is to understand the business objectives, understand how human performance impacts them, identify the gaps and opportunities, etc. So, back to the question - are ISD / ADDIE / HPT relevant?

Front-End Analysis: Improving Performance

Dashe & Thomson

HPT follows the framework of the ADDIE (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation) model, but it puts greater emphasis on the front-end analysis phase. Identify the performance gap. The performance gap is the difference between where the organization or individual is and where they want to be. The gap is closed by designing the appropriate intervention. Do we have a performance problem? How will we know when the problem is solved?

And those who were successful business people prior to landing in learning and development, sometimes by happy accident. To be sure, some of that is the result of existing relationships with stakeholders on the business side. Speak the Language of Business.
