We’re sharing some of our favorite instructional design techniques here in this toolkit to support new instructional designers or “old” ones who want to sharpen their saw (pun completely intended). Why a toolkit? Rather than following a mostly linear ADDIE path through a project, we use Agile project management and an iterative approach.

My list begins as such: Important Theories and Terms: Gagnes 9 Events Kirkpatrick Levels ADDIE Cognitive Load Theory ARCS (John Keller) Books: Ruth Clark: e-Learning and the Science of Instruction Malcom S.

And ADDIE wasn't even there to see it.


There's been lot of talk in Twitterland lately about the usefulness of the ADDIE process model often used in instructional design (much on the theme of whether ADDIE is dead), and the validity/existence of "informal" learning. I'm not interested in the dead/undead discussion of ADDIE so much as concerned about the desire on the part of many to apply it to every situation. As L & D professionals we need to have many items in our toolkits. ADDIE is one.


ADDIE and the 5 Rules of Zen

While ADDIE or ISD might look like an overblown, time-wasting toolkit, we need to realize that we do not need every tool within that kit. While there are several Zen rules that govern the aesthetics of Japanese gardens and other art forms in Japan, five of them can be directly applied to ADDIE to aid you in creating an energized, but calm learning platform (inspired by a Presentation Zen post ).
