For the current ADL webinar series on mobile, I gave a presentation on contextualizing mobile in the larger picture of L&D (a natural extension of my most recent books). That we should be creating them by abstracting from successful practices, we should be conceptualizing them, or adopting them from other areas.

Originally developed by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), an initiative of the Unite States Department of Defense, SCORM was designed to standardize and modernize their training courses. All of this adds up to give a much clearer and deeper overall picture of a learner’s progress. Learning can be tracked both on and offline.

These must be meticulously identified and linked to translate into the entire learning picture. the Director of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, aptly said, ‘xAPI is what helps us put the puzzle together’. And as Sae Schatz, Ph.D. , What Is xAPI? xAPI is a massive ‘upgrade’ to SCORM.

While IMS & IEEE held meetings to get learning content standards nailed down, ADL just put their foot down with SCORM (and US Defense is a big foot), and it pretty much got everyone’s attention. Until then, any investment has trouble being leveraged in a longer term picture, as the companies you go with may not survive!
