In this post I am not going to talk about open source learning management systems such as eFront [1] but rather dedicated open source "authoring tools". I highly encourage you to leave a commend if you know any other open source authoring tool.

Taking cmi5 adoption further by developing a Conformance Test Suite

Rustici Software

For the last 18 years, some of the most important work we’ve done at Rustici Software has been the standards-based efforts we’ve worked on with the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL). In 2010, we were awarded a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) from ADL to modernize SCORM Communication, an effort that became known as Project Tin Can, and ultimately xAPI. Since cmi5 was first released in 2016, there’s been a missing piece that has slowed its adoption.

Sign #2: There is no certification process for tools and packages for the latest SCORM 2004 4 th edition. Currently, someone can be a 4 th edition adopter but * not* certified. [3]. Sign #3: ADL itself heavily supports Tin Can as the successor of SCORM.[4]. Now, with the introduction of Tin Can API it seems certain that its adoption rate will decline even further. Low adoption. The end result was low adoption from vendors and instructional designers.

Challenge to Learn

This evening I attended a webinar by ADL: the new standard (project TinCan) kickoff. The ADL will launch it in June. The next step is the adoption of the standard by authoring tools and LMS. Scorm is finally going to catch up with the current times. TinCan focuses on capturing activities: I (Actor/Agent) Did (Verb) This (Activity) and the ‘I’, the ‘Did’ and the ‘Activity’ can be almost anything.

Experience (Tin Can) API: What to Expect from Your LMS Provider

Bottom-Line Performance

ADL, or Advanced Distributive Learning , is the government agency behind the spec. An API is a language two software programs or databases use to talk to each-other. One example given by ADL is a “bookmarklet” that can be installed on a web browser and be used to track informal activities such as web pages visited. These are currently stand-alone products, but ADL predicts they will eventually be integrated right into LMS’s. Tin Can. Experience. TIN CAN! Experience!

Transitioning from SCORM to xAPI

Web Courseworks

I wish I could tell you that there’s an easy fix or a mere change in settings when you export your project from your favorite SCORM authoring tool. Some SCORM authoring tools promise to do just that. Changing the settings in a SCORM authoring tool would be like taking your sleek new screwdriver and bashing it against screws in order to keep using it like a hammer. It completely misses the point of adopting the xAPI standard.

Experience API

With shared common models becoming more common, reporting tools targeting those shared models could be created. This provided a range of off the shelf tools for common experiences. This is the primary difference between the two, with “xapi-authored-profiles” being more technical. An “ xAPI profile ” is a newer concept, created by ADL in a more formal way through their BAA process.

xAPI, LRS – The Interview

Aaron, can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you became involved with ADL? In 2003, the eLearning startup I worked for shuttered its doors as our customers moved to adopt SCORM, and we had no idea how to do that. Two months after my layoff, a company called CTC recruited me to work for ADL. My job was to help author SCORM 2004, focusing on how to develop content that would work in SCORM systems.

This particular one was special, as we were formally reviewing the Project Authorization Request (PAR) for the Experience API to become a formal standards project. I put adopter in quotes because, according to the spec, without the LRS, he’s not conformant.
