What You Missed at TRYxAPI – ATD ICE

Our discussions featured Trish Uhl , Russell Duhon , Duncan Welder , Phil and Nick Stephenson , Lizelle van den Berg , Ian Gibson , Damon Regan of ADL with participation by many more. This customer-centric approach is evident in the case study examples shared to model how other vendors and other organizations can share their tools and their case studies. Taking cmi5 adoption further by developing a Conformance Test Suite

Rustici Software

For the last 18 years, some of the most important work we’ve done at Rustici Software has been the standards-based efforts we’ve worked on with the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL). In 2010, we were awarded a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) from ADL to modernize SCORM Communication, an effort that became known as Project Tin Can, and ultimately xAPI. Since cmi5 was first released in 2016, there’s been a missing piece that has slowed its adoption.

Mike Rustici – Crystal Balling with Learnnovators

Learnnovators

Mike’s company is leading the world towards adoption of the Tin Can API, the successor to SCORM. Learnnovators: In this age where most learning happens ‘informally’ (through on-the-job-learning and peer-learning), how well do you think the early adopters of Experience API support informal learning? Mike: Early adopters are broken into two categories, traditional e-learning vendors and new market entrants. The ADL vision is actually looking this far out in the future.

With Gratitude…

MakingBetter

There are a myriad of reasons why 2015 was good for Megan and I, but the one reason that stands out is the incredible gains in xAPI’s adoption that happened this year. We know there’s been incredible growth in xAPI adoption. Our business boomed and so did that of many software vendors who create solutions that are tailored to meet some of the many things people use xAPI for. This is why open source was so crucial a path for xAPI.

A Glance Back at xAPI; A Look Ahead at Data Ownership

MakingBetter

The tl;dr : Like hardware, w hen it comes to data, if you can’t open it, you don’t own it. If you can’t open it, you don’t own it. None of us standards nerds are used to the market so quickly adopting what we create. This success comes with a sharp edge: it’s exactly the meteoric adoption of what the spec is today that will slow down getting to everything else on the above list. Other LRS vendors are following suit.

An LRS is an integral element in the process flow for utilizing the Experience API (xAPI) standard by ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning). The LRS was first adopted in the eLearning sector in 2011 seeking to transform eLearning specifications.

xAPI, LRS – The Interview

eLearning 24-7

Aaron, can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you became involved with ADL? In 2003, the eLearning startup I worked for shuttered its doors as our customers moved to adopt SCORM, and we had no idea how to do that. Two months after my layoff, a company called CTC recruited me to work for ADL. I worked with ADL from 2003-2006 and participated in the Technical Working Group afterwards. Last heard ADL calls this new standard the Experience API? (on

Standard Options Apply

MakingBetter

This post is for vendors, developers and implementers of the Experience API and for anyone who may one day create something with xAPI. I’m going to ask you as vendors, entrepreneurs, developers, designers from all around the world to provide me with your counsel as I ultimately must direct the effort. I want to encourage it by keeping it as open as we can AND by making it possible for the best approaches, not just the best spin, to find adoption.

I’m a recent convert, perhaps on the path to open source evangelism.) Because it’s open source, there are no licensing costs. Moodle and other open source products have huge communities behind them. Talented individuals who can program like hell and believe in the open source philosophy. There’s no vendor who creates Moodle per say. But the beauty of open source is you can customize it.

ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning). Often contrasted with the ADDIE process, the Agile design method emerged in the 1970s and became widely adopted in the 1990s. Integrating with a vendor’s API can speed up the eLearning processes by automating time-consuming manual tasks like updating, deleting, or exporting lists of users. It’s essentially a set of rules for xAPI which narrows the overly wide specification to increase adoption in the industry. Open Source Software.

Webinar Q&A: Empowering Continuous Learning with the Experience API (xAPI)

Experience API

Answer: xAPI allows for learners to be identified by email address, Open ID or an account on some system, such as an LMS. Open Source LRS. Is there an open source LRS? Answer: There’s four different Open Source LRSs that I’m aware of: Learning Locker , ADL LRS , lxHive and TinMan. If you’re looking to get started with xAPI on a limited budget or want to do a lot of development yourself, an Open Source LRS is a good option.
