The Role of xAPI in Creating Powerful Learning Experiences for the Modern Workforce

AICC and SCORM – The Core Standards of eLearning. AICC stands for Aviation Industry CBT (Computer-Based Training) Committee. Designed specifically to cater to eLearning courseware designed for use in the aviation industry, the standards were adopted by course-providers to create eLearning content for all industries. AICC and SCORM each came with their own set of limitations. It was originally a research project that was awarded to Rustici Software by ADL.

SCORM the trailblazer: SCORM revolutionized the eLearning industry because content developers, instructional designers and courseware administrators could freely use any LMS to create training programs , without having to worry about data interoperability. Two important achievements of AICC were: 1993: The AICC produced Computer-Managed Instruction (CMI) interoperability guidelines, which made it possible for LMSs to share data with CBTs provided by different vendors.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough. They wanted a standard, took a plausible set of standards from the work, and called it the Standard Courseware Object Reference Model (SCORM). Ultimately, it may be Caliper for education, and xAPI for business.

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

You want to implement your courseware to the SCORM standard if you plan to have it launched and/or tracked under an LMS. AICC goes after the same thing as what I've described above for SCORM (tracking under an LMS). There are a bunch of other standards by ADL (who is responsible for SCORM ), IMS , IEEE LTSC including CORDRAâ„¢ , LOM , Meta-data , etc. Note: ARIADNE, AICC, IEEE LTSC, and IMS all participate in ADL's work on SCORM).
