Track and trace Learners results. What do SCORM compliance, AICC, XAPI and CMI5 mean?

Challenge to Learn

Or are you just confused by all the abbreviations like: SCORM, AICC, XAPI, and CMI5? A course is SCORM compliant when it meets the requirements of the standard set by the ADL. It is for Vendors like easygenerator or other authoring tools to come up with simple and useful applications of the XAPI. It comes from the aviation industry and it is called AICC. The good news is that both Scorm and AICC will merge into CMI5 , the new XAPI based standard.

AICC and SCORM Compliance: The Benefits for Your e-Learning

Trivantis

The Benefits of Making Your e-Learning AICC and SCORM Compliant . In the late 1990s, each learning management system had its own proprietary content format, which encouraged vendor lock-in. You had to use that vendor’s tools to create e-Learning that worked with that LMS, or your content wouldn’t play. To solve this problem, in 1999 the government tasked a small research laboratory, ADL, to “develop common specifications and standards for e-learning.”

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. Sure there are over 100 vendors in this industry and probably 95% you have never heard of and whom have great products that can meet or beat the big players.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant. The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough.

eLearning Standards—What They Are and Why They Matter

Trivantis

To accomplish this, the industry has come up with several eLearning standards that allow courses created by any vendor to “talk” with an LMS created by any other vendor. It all started with the Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee (AICC), which was formed in 1988. The major aircraft manufacturers of the time, Boeing, Airbus, and McDonnell Douglas, got together and formed the AICC to come up with a standard way for courses to communicate results to an LMS.

SCORM and the Whole 2.0 Thing Again.

Mark Oehlert

ve ever met anyone, outside the DOD / ADL who doesn???t t think SCORM and AICC are over engineered pieces of junk. And the LMS / LCMS products and vendors engender pure hate at every contact point whether purchaser, content develoeprs, admins or end users. I recently posted about the SCORM 2.0

Companies should be wary of the value a “free” learning platform can deliver and alert to the costs quickly accrued in maintaining, updating and supporting an LMS without a vendor. RFP (request for proposal ): Document prepared by organizations to help assess LMS vendors during a selection process. SaaS (software as a service): Software hosted in the cloud by an LMS vendor so that customers don’t need to install the system locally.

SCORM was first developed by the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative – ADL, a research group sponsored by the US Department of Defense. ADL recommends using SCORM 2004 3rd edition because it is more widespread compared to other SCORM versions.

Many vendors hyping PowerPoint to Flash angle as key feature. Courses appearing in the market in a linear fashion, a result of people entering the space from a ILT background, it fits under this category, because vendors are not explaining the non-linear nor the true essence of WBT of courses.

An LRS is an integral element in the process flow for utilizing the Experience API (xAPI) standard by ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning). Different LRS vendors have different pricing models depending on a wide range of factors, and it may be difficult to compare prices between vendors.

1988: Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC) was formed to standardize CBT – The AICC was an international group of aircraft manufacturers, instructors, courseware developers, vendors etc, who came together to standardize the delivery of eLearning content for the aviation industry. 1998: The AICC came up with the Web-based Training (WBT) guidelines for interoperability of eLearning content on the Web.

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

AICC goes after the same thing as what I've described above for SCORM (tracking under an LMS). There are a bunch of other standards by ADL (who is responsible for SCORM ), IMS , IEEE LTSC including CORDRAâ„¢ , LOM , Meta-data , etc. Note: ARIADNE, AICC, IEEE LTSC, and IMS all participate in ADL's work on SCORM). So, when I've been consulting with vendors who are working on any kind of authoring system, that was a particularly interesting standard.

Test SCORM Courses with an LMS

Tony Karrer

We are developing a SCORM or AICC compliant course either custom or using an authoring tool. Here are some ideas - SCORM Test Suite One of the best things about SCORM (ADL's Sharable Content Reference Model) is that it is pretty easy to test and diagnose problems. My first piece of advice for anyone developing a course is to make sure it runs with the ADL's test suite because that gives you cover in case there are issues.

What is SCORM & Decoding Its Importance For eLearning

ProProfs

Hence, if an LMS vendor claims its software as SCORM compliant, it means that the LMS you have selected supports integration with other SCORM compliant content authoring tools used for creating courses. They came up with the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL) and created the SCORM. Despite facing robust competition from AICC ( Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee), SCORM continues to dominate the online learning landscape.

One of the most interesting items which presents to me an unknown variable is CMI-5, a compliance standard (formally with AICC) now headed up by ADL. Rather than go into a whole diatribe about CMI-5, I recommend you read this info on CMI-5 (put together in part from vendor RISC). Thus by saying Tin Can repeatedly, I was doing you an injustice, since in essence I was putting out a brand name by one vendor.

ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning). The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard. A predecessor to SCORM, AICC was difficult to work with and many steps were required to get content in the format running in a learning management system (LMS). FAQs allow learners to get the information they need without having to contact the vendor directly. .
