Anthony Altieri @aa_altieri "Analytics: What You Want to Know" I got here late so my notes are partial.he seems to be talking about the difference between using Google Analytics vs. xAPI for capturing data. For specific user date on devices and more - you need to enable what they call "user tracking" -- although google terms don't allow you to send personal informaiton e.g You can give a unique token to each user and it will track those users (although not personal data).

Tin Can will also cause us to think more analytically about our learning programs now that we have more data and visibility into a broader set of learning activities. Traditional vendors are largely adopting at the SCORM parity level and using Tin Can as a better way to track formal training programs. I think we mostly know how to track informal learning with Tin Can now, but there is still a long way to go in making useful information out of all that data.

Think xAPI is Next-Generation SCORM? Think Again

Talented Learning

Rewind briefly to a day in 2010, when the dew was still fresh and early morning sun filled the meeting room at Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). Instead, the team at ADL actually paved the way for the Actively Narrating Technical Interface-Sharable Content Object Reference Model – otherwise known as the ANTI-SCORM. Fortunately, the ADL effort wasn’t a total loss. Bridging the Learning Analytics Gap: How Guided Insights Lead to Better Results.

With SCORM Cloud you can perform the following activities: Track usage with built-in reporting tools that help you identify who is taking what courses and dig into question-level course analytics. Use an ADL-conformant Learning Record Store (LRS)+. Powerful Course Analytics: Comprehensive analytics about everything that happens inside your LMS. The quality of the content determines the success of your virtual training programs.

Moving and receiving xAPI data in an LRS rich environment

Plenty of systems may send and receive xAPI data, including LMSs, analytics tools, gamification platforms, LRSs, mobile apps or VR/AR platforms. Learning analytics platforms: Learning analytics platforms are designed to analyze xAPI data they receive. LMSs: LMSs are used to play and track eLearning content and can often allow users to analyze the data they play. Step one: set up Watershed in Zapier to track experiences that occur outside of an LMS.

What I can see now as an implementer, that I couldn’t see from inside of ADL, is that to realize data interoperability part of the work will be improvements to the spec; the more important work we’ll need to do, as an industry, is improve how we commonly implement xAPI as vendors and consultants, how we call out when that practice is or isn’t happening, and how we onboard new tools and toolmakers into the ecosystem we should be creating.

Tin Can API, the evolution of SCORM

Paradiso

Originally developed by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), an initiative of the Unite States Department of Defense, SCORM was designed to standardize and modernize their training courses. It is a set of standards and specifications for developing web-based educational technology, standards developed by the ADL which had always to adhere strictly to SCROM’s requirements, these being “accessible, reusable, inoperable, and durable content and systems”.

Because (1) LMSs in corporations are primarily used to track stuff (IMHO) so until open source is truly able to slice and dice data (often custom reports) for executives they won't replace commercial LMSs. (2) I'm fairly certain that google analytics could crawl a moodle install and reveal some amazing tracking measurements. I've seen some very impressive uses of google analytics as a measurement/tracking tool for web-based training.
