The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough. The ADL provided compliance testing, so that content and systems could be validated for interoperability. And we want to know whether or how well someone did for critical business skills. From web activity streams, people started thinking about tracking other forms of activity. ADL decided to create a new standard, the Experience API (xAPI; originally known as Tin Can).

xAPI, LRS – The Interview

eLearning 24-7

Aaron, can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you became involved with ADL? Two months after my layoff, a company called CTC recruited me to work for ADL. I worked with ADL from 2003-2006 and participated in the Technical Working Group afterwards. I worked with business analysts, IT and communications teams on governance for these new technologies. This work informed the conversations with several current and former ADL friends.

Tin Can: My First impressions from mLearnCon 2012

Upside Learning

I attended a session by Aaron Silvers, Community Manager at Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). Tin Can focuses on activity logging to create a personal learning stream which is beyond the boundaries of a learning system within an organization. LRS is the single, safe data store where a learner’s complete learning stream (all instances of activities logged) would be stored digitally. ADL) who would take up responsibility of having an LRS for each person?

Test SCORM Courses with an LMS

Tony Karrer

The client's staff is too busy to run a series of tests and they have no patience for problems. Here are some ideas - SCORM Test Suite One of the best things about SCORM (ADL's Sharable Content Reference Model) is that it is pretty easy to test and diagnose problems. My first piece of advice for anyone developing a course is to make sure it runs with the ADL's test suite because that gives you cover in case there are issues.

ICS Learning

An authoritative whitepaper on how to plan, implement, and evaluate an e-learning program for your business. Your initial plan should include the following: Identify and define the business goals.

Webinar Q&A: Empowering Continuous Learning with the Experience API (xAPI)

Experience API

Answer: There’s four different Open Source LRSs that I’m aware of: Learning Locker , ADL LRS , lxHive and TinMan. Answer: The original version of Experience API was developed by Rustici Software as part of a research project commissioned by ADL. This was later officially named ‘Experience API’ by ADL, but by that point there had been so much excitement and even early adoption of Experience API that the name stuck and we ended up with two names for exactly the same thing.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. CourseLab – ADL SCORM certified, no less. As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Corporate Moodle: A Tipping Point?

Learning Visions

Out-of-the-box Moodle holds little attraction to a busy trainer or business owner who lacks an IT staff or instructional designer. However, small businesses demand it , and require it to survive. Drupal can be a little tougher to crank up, but they're coming on stream as well. There are essentially three camps in my organization (1) the parent agency, that favors one of the big LMS products (2) the small army of novices driving the ADL boat (3) the HRMS folks. (2)

Some of these discussions about tools is similar to the arguments that the main stream media has made about blogs and wikis. It also requires a certain skill set to know how to take a big picture approach to match learning solutions to specific business goals. In the business world, the justification for the expense of a learning solution has to be proven by providing some sort of measurable outcome. This group includes folks from the ADL, IBM, Sun, etc.
