Responding to recent ADL funding news

Experience API

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of weeks learning about some things that are happening with ADL (the governing body for SCORM and closest thing we currently have to a single steward for xAPI right now). Some funding things happened at ADL, but ADL will continue to do work on xAPI and with the xAPI community. Now the long version. ADL’s funding has been reduced substantially in the short-term.

The Community Responds

MakingBetter

I hoped in my last post that the community would indeed respond with ideas, insights, opinions and concerns. While we seem to all concur that we’d do well by breaking up the spec into smaller components, there are ideas shared by the community so far that differ from what I posted — specifically on what lines can/should be drawn around different parts of the existing specification. There are a couple of concerns that seem to resonate pretty strongly among the community.

Day 2 @LSCON, Nice keynote and I finally understand TinCan, Experience API, Scorm, ADL, IACC and CMI-5…….

Challenge to Learn

CMI-5 and XAPI (Tin Can API), Bill McDonald , Kris Rockwell It took me a while to figure the meaning of TinCan and I understood the impact it can have on our learning community, but I never understood why we have two competing standards (Scorm and AICC), and now there is a new standard emerging CMI-5 based on TinCan. Later on the ADL was formed and they wanted a more extended standard, based on the AICC specs. Both the ADL and AICC where working on a new generation of standards.

Standard Options Apply

MakingBetter

The hope in this approach is that the xAPI specification community has more or less held a high level of amity before, as the spec was being developed. Over a year past its release as Version 1.0, International adopters, outside of NATO allies, are not able to work on this through ADL for obvious reasons, but they have come (and will come) to IEEE, and all sectors of adoption are welcome to work together there. There’s a strong possibility that collaborative work between ADL and IMS could help a great deal. Not only is there a profile in our Registry , there’s also a Community of Practice still working on a version. If there are multiple working versions of what data to capture, then how is a reporting system attempting to derive meaning about “video” supposed to do so? We think ADL could assert an information model.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Occasionally, we invite learning community experts to share their advice with our readers. But that does not mean xAPI is a next-generation version of SCORM (aka Sharable Content Object Reference Model ). Aaron, can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you became involved with ADL? Two months after my layoff, a company called CTC recruited me to work for ADL. I worked with ADL from 2003-2006 and participated in the Technical Working Group afterwards. This work informed the conversations with several current and former ADL friends. There have been multiple versions of both, but they haven’t expanded much to meet the growth of technology over time. This is why the collaboration announced recently between ADL and AICC on Tin Can is such a huge deal. Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) has been supporting the community in building out the Tin Can API specification. When you take a step back, it’s a little funny that so many people are talking about standards in learning technology right now.
