The ongoing work of learning standards

With the advent of Flash, many authoring tools started creating output that could be played by the Flash player, which meant you didn’t need special software to use the courses (if your IT org would support you having it). Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). Vendors got on board, and SCORM became a more-or-less viable mechanism.

#ASTDTK14 Review

eLearning 24-7

ASTDTK14 zoomed into Vegas last week with about 60 vendors (est.) On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Authoring tools vendors – pickings were slim, Adobe was present, so was Allen Interactions (Zebra Zapps), but no Articulate? Conferencing vendors – Were there any? Wi-Fi for booth vendors was horrible.

With Gratitude…

We created things with great people. We launched an online journal, the xAPI Quarterly , kickstarting the publishing arm of our business, Connections Forum , and we ran our first events, xAPI Camps that each were co-created with our participants. Our business boomed and so did that of many software vendors who create solutions that are tailored to meet some of the many things people use xAPI for. Megan and I find ourselves grateful, as the year comes to a close.

But, back to the dashboards and LRSs… because the job of the LRS is something that is hard to “visualize”, many LRS vendors (including us) provided xAPI dashboards in order to let you see what was in the LRS. This work formalized in the original ADL Vocab Server and it’s verb registries.

None of us standards nerds are used to the market so quickly adopting what we create. Vendor lock-in happens as LRSs make data LESS accessible to work with, perpetuating the scenario LMS vendors implemented with SCORM. Other LRS vendors are following suit.

So they created the techniques in order to be able to create the movies. Thanks to the TinCan API (now renamed into ‘experience API’) the technique is ahead of us (learning developers and vendors). It will be a mutual challenge for the people who are developing this standard, for vendors and for eLearning developers. The guy sitting on the left is Aron Silvers from ADL. The vendors.

Aaron, can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you became involved with ADL? Two months after my layoff, a company called CTC recruited me to work for ADL. I worked with ADL from 2003-2006 and participated in the Technical Working Group afterwards. We created a strategic framework that mapped knowledge sharing to measurable gains in productivity, quality and revenue. This work informed the conversations with several current and former ADL friends.

eLearning Standards—What They Are and Why They Matter

To accomplish this, the industry has come up with several eLearning standards that allow courses created by any vendor to “talk” with an LMS created by any other vendor. In 1993, the AICC created the CMI specification—still in use today—which specified the communications between a course and an LMS. The AICC was dissolved in 2014, and all of its efforts have been transferred to the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) group.

The TTS vendors learned two things from the voice-talent pricing model: The price level – Because of their perceived lower voice quality, TTS voices need to be priced much lower than their real counterparts to be an attractive alternative The TTS voice price need to be fixed according to the value of its use to the customer. Audio Distribution – a sound file that was created with the voice is distributed and played to an audience.

Ultimate eLearning terms you should know: Part 2 (M-Z)

Companies should be wary of the value a “free” learning platform can deliver and alert to the costs quickly accrued in maintaining, updating and supporting an LMS without a vendor. Understanding who learning content is created for, and what they should learn from it, will shape how it’s designed and presented. Many instructors and course developers have started to create podcasts to share their expertise with learners and the eLearning world in general.

SCORM – Set of Standards that make Courses and LMS Compatible

So, normally it is ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning – a research group) that handles all the aspects related to SCORM. However, it is not mandatory to go through the process via the ADL route only. This organization also gives a suite of self-tests, that when undergone, can certify the vendor for providing SCORM compliant LMS. This eventually helps the LMS vendors prove that their products are SCORM compliant.

Why SCORM 2004 failed & what that means for Tin Can

Sign #3: ADL itself heavily supports Tin Can as the successor of SCORM.[4]. It was a lot of work for LMS vendors to implement and more importantly, it was too complex for many courseware developers to use. The end result was low adoption from vendors and instructional designers. Even when vendors offered support for SCORM 2004 this was handicapped to great extent. Almost none of them have an interface for creating a dynamically sequenced Multi-SCO package.

Track and trace Learners results. What do SCORM compliance, AICC, XAPI and CMI5 mean?

Challenge to Learn

A course is SCORM compliant when it meets the requirements of the standard set by the ADL. It makes it possible to create an e-Learning course in any authoring environment and run it in any SCORM compliant LMS and report your learners results to that LMS. The basic set up of a SCORM compliant course is simple, here is how it works: You create a course in an e-Learning authoring tool (like easygenerator) or in a LMS. Courses created in a LMS are locked into that LMS.

A SCORM-Certified LMS Helps Companies Score

It was during that year when President Clinton signed an executive order that led to the creation of Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), the initiative that SCORM comes under. From the very beginning, Advanced Distributed Learning’s goal was to create a common set of standards for training software that would guide government agencies as they transitioned from in-person training to online training.

Tin Can vs. SCORM: What’s It All About?

KZO Innovations

Both SCORM and the Tin Can API were developed by the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), a research group sponsored by the DoD, with help from Rustici Software. This API is much less structured than previous specifications and those that created the API understand that people learn from interactions with other people, content, and beyond.

Day 5: xAPI and more – what next for SCORM?

While many eLearning vendors still support AICC, the standard is usually a legacy of older platforms and businesses. From the perspective of an LMS vendor, the original white paper was received as the definitive word from the xAPI crew and quickly became set in stone. eLearning developers believed the paper described exactly how learning platforms and authoring tools should create, package and import xAPI courses. That’s one exciting aspect of CC for LMS vendors.

AICC and SCORM Compliance: The Benefits for Your e-Learning

In the late 1990s, each learning management system had its own proprietary content format, which encouraged vendor lock-in. You had to use that vendor’s tools to create e-Learning that worked with that LMS, or your content wouldn’t play. To solve this problem, in 1999 the government tasked a small research laboratory, ADL, to “develop common specifications and standards for e-learning.” Start creating graded e-Learning now with a free 30-day free trial !

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

But, I'm going to try to make a practice of creating blog posts around some of the questions. There are a bunch of other standards by ADL (who is responsible for SCORM ), IMS , IEEE LTSC including CORDRAâ„¢ , LOM , Meta-data , etc. Note: ARIADNE, AICC, IEEE LTSC, and IMS all participate in ADL's work on SCORM). So, when I've been consulting with vendors who are working on any kind of authoring system, that was a particularly interesting standard.

Tin Can API & the Future of E-Learning

This standard is being developed by Rustici Software (with a world-wide active community participating and contributing) for Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) – the keepers of SCORM. However, ‘Experience API’ is ADL’s official name for this standard. More and more vendors (authoring tools, Learning Management Systems, social platforms, mobile games, and simulations) are adopting or testing this new standard.

Standard Options Apply

This post is for vendors, developers and implementers of the Experience API and for anyone who may one day create something with xAPI. I’m going to ask you as vendors, entrepreneurs, developers, designers from all around the world to provide me with your counsel as I ultimately must direct the effort. Creating an LRS is the most difficult and complex part of xAPI, and its uses are scoped only to activity statements that are valid xAPI statements.

Test SCORM Courses with an LMS

I was just asked by someone about how they could test a course they were creating against a particular Learning Management System (LMS) (in this case Docent 6.5). Here are some ideas - SCORM Test Suite One of the best things about SCORM (ADL's Sharable Content Reference Model) is that it is pretty easy to test and diagnose problems. The test suite was created to try to help get implementations to work together better.

Why You Don’t Need a SCORM Compliant Learning Management System

There’s no way to limit access to specific users other than to create different courses and send out links to the right people. When ADL created SCORM trainers weren’t thinking about these things yet. The first thing you’ll need is software that can create SCORM-compliant learning materials. Even a medium-sized company might have a handful of people involved in creating training materials. Which is why many people buy SCORM trainings from third-party vendors.

Phew! Reflecting on #ASTD10

Learning Visions

People are frustrated with ongoing licensing fees, lack of good customer support and responsiveness from traditional LMS vendors, and slow time to implement. But did you know there is actually a Mr. SCORM and that he is the fabulous Aaron Silvers of ADL ? Getting social I didn’t have a lot of time to cruise the expo hall (man, there were a lot of vendors!),

What is SCORM & Decoding Its Importance For eLearning

Imagine a situation where you are asked to create an elearning program or search for a suitable learning management system (LMS) tool for achieving your training requirements. Hence, if an LMS vendor claims its software as SCORM compliant, it means that the LMS you have selected supports integration with other SCORM compliant content authoring tools used for creating courses. They came up with the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL) and created the SCORM.

This standard is being developed by Rustici Software (with a world-wide active community participating and contributing) for Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) – the keepers of SCORM.
