Responding to recent ADL funding news

Experience API

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of weeks learning about some things that are happening with ADL (the governing body for SCORM and closest thing we currently have to a single steward for xAPI right now). Some funding things happened at ADL, but ADL will continue to do work on xAPI and with the xAPI community. ADL’s funding has been reduced substantially in the short-term. I think ADL’s done a great job of this over time.

xAPI: Why Should I Care and What Could It Do for Me?

In the training world, we were introduced to SCORM from an initiative that arose in 1999, led by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). xAPI, like SCORM before it, started from a DoD and ADL 2011 initiative. This can result in the development of more effective training, better targeted programs, and even create strong support for the effectiveness and clear worth of training to the organization.

New SCORM standard: I (Actor/Agent) Did (Verb) This (Activity) #TinCanApi

Challenge to Learn

This evening I attended a webinar by ADL: the new standard (project TinCan) kickoff. The ADL will launch it in June. This will take some time, so there will not be an effect on the learning activities in the short term. But this effect will be visible in 2013.

A separation of the Data Model (statement structure and its components) from the Data Binding (JSON), effectively making it possible to work with XML, or other bindings, as an alternative. The current specification group in ADL is a logical group to do the splitting of the specification as it exists today, rather than IEEE which has less representation of the people who developed and have implemented Version 1.0

A Glance Back at xAPI; A Look Ahead at Data Ownership

There’s a group hosted by ADL that is working towards this. But if organizations can’t access their data directly, they can’t do this effectively. The tl;dr : Like hardware, w hen it comes to data, if you can’t open it, you don’t own it.

Why SCORM 2004 failed & what that means for Tin Can

Sign #3: ADL itself heavily supports Tin Can as the successor of SCORM.[4]. This meant that you could do some effective reporting on questions and the distribution of answers. This was a side-effect of high complexity. Nothing is perfect though as ADL admits [5].

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

There are a bunch of other standards by ADL (who is responsible for SCORM ), IMS , IEEE LTSC including CORDRAâ„¢ , LOM , Meta-data , etc. However, as Pierre pointed out in the comments (and I've edited the text here based on his comments - thanks Pierre) - ADL's SCORM really incorporates what we need from these other standards and thus we've not needed to spend effort going into these standards separately.

Getting SCORM Content into your LMS
