Responding to recent ADL funding news

Experience API

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of weeks learning about some things that are happening with ADL (the governing body for SCORM and closest thing we currently have to a single steward for xAPI right now). Some funding things happened at ADL, but ADL will continue to do work on xAPI and with the xAPI community. ADL’s funding has been reduced substantially in the short-term. I think ADL’s done a great job of this over time.

xAPI: Why Should I Care and What Could It Do for Me?

Meridian

In the training world, we were introduced to SCORM from an initiative that arose in 1999, led by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). xAPI, like SCORM before it, started from a DoD and ADL 2011 initiative. This can result in the development of more effective training, better targeted programs, and even create strong support for the effectiveness and clear worth of training to the organization.

This evening I attended a webinar by ADL: the new standard (project TinCan) kickoff. The ADL will launch it in June. This will take some time, so there will not be an effect on the learning activities in the short term. But this effect will be visible in 2013. Scorm is finally going to catch up with the current times.

When the AICC disbanded, they transferred the CMI-5 project to the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative to ensure continued access to all of your training content. The AICC is dissolved, but having an LMS that supports AICC is still crucial. In 1988, the Aviation Industry Computer-based Training Committee (AICC) was formed to make sure training material could be developed, delivered and evaluated across the increasing number of computer-based training platforms.

Rewind briefly to a day in 2010, when the dew was still fresh and early morning sun filled the meeting room at Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). And although that difference may seem like subtle semantics, it can have a huge effect on reporting. Instead, the team at ADL actually paved the way for the Actively Narrating Technical Interface-Sharable Content Object Reference Model – otherwise known as the ANTI-SCORM. Fortunately, the ADL effort wasn’t a total loss.

One of them is that it enables reuse of course content, and that helps to improve the effectiveness of training. On the other hand, SCORM certified LMS ensures that a specific product under discussion gets certified by SCORM governing body, ADL. What I can see now as an implementer, that I couldn’t see from inside of ADL, is that to realize data interoperability part of the work will be improvements to the spec; the more important work we’ll need to do, as an industry, is improve how we commonly implement xAPI as vendors and consultants, how we call out when that practice is or isn’t happening, and how we onboard new tools and toolmakers into the ecosystem we should be creating.

Sign #3: ADL itself heavily supports Tin Can as the successor of SCORM.[4]. This meant that you could do some effective reporting on questions and the distribution of answers. This was a side-effect of high complexity. SCORM 2004 had to change in order to adapt to such a dramatically different environment and rather than do that ADL decided to save itself the trouble and start from scratch through what we now know as Tin Can or Experience API (xAPI).
