SCORM, or Shareable Content Object Reference Model, is a learning interoperability standard. It is a set of rules for how content pieces ( commonly referred to as “courses” ) and systems that host this content ( widely called Learning Management Systems or LMSes ) communicate. The end result became xAPI.

It’s all too common to hear someone say “cmi5 is the bridge between SCORM and xAPI” around the office. But we’ve come a long way since the early days of SCORM in terms of technological advancements. Behold: cmi5, which provides a way to move from SCORM to the more modern xAPI specification. Essentially: cmi5 = LMS + xAPI data.
