The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves. Meanwhile, JVC’s VHS standard wasn’t quite as good, but they openly licensed it. As Stephen Johnson tells us, in his book Where Good Ideas Come From , the openness of standards fosters innovation. . Standards provide several benefits. Learning Standards.

Day 5: xAPI and more – what next for SCORM?

LearnUpon

As we approach the end of our SCORM series, in many ways it’s just the beginning for eLearning content standards. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. While many eLearning vendors still support AICC, the standard is usually a legacy of older platforms and businesses. eLearning now: Tin Can (xAPI).

Semantic Interoperability

Experience API

Because without semantic interoperability, the Experience API (xAPI) has a limited future. For us, semantic interoperability in xAPI will be achieved when there is a generally accepted information model. There’s a strong possibility that collaborative work between ADL and IMS could help a great deal. xAPI, on the other hand, is fundamentally a communication protocol applied as a specification for elearning. We think ADL could assert an information model.

Real (e)Learning Heroes

I’m thinking in particular of those who work to advance our standards. The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. The Department of Defense’s ADL initiative decided upon a version, to move things forward, and thus was born SCORM.

SCORM vs. LTI: what’s the difference?

Rustici Software

If you’ve been familiar with Rustici Software for a long time, you’ll know we’ve helped people for a long time with SCORM and xAPI. Now that we’re providing you even more options for exporting content, we thought it was important to outline the differences between SCORM and LTI, so you can select the eLearning standard that is right for you. LTI is focused on connecting learning systems in a standard way. Governance: LTI is created and maintained by IMS; SCORM by ADL.

The Ultimate Glossary of eLearning Terms

LearnUpon

From Agile to xAPI and everything in between, there are a lot of eLearning terms to get your head around. ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning). Notable contributions include SCORM and xAPI. The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard. A certificate confirms that a learner has successfully completed a training program to a predefined standard. Standard.
