We innovated when we needed to and we stuck to tried and true processes when we needed to, too. These are measureable outcomes of an open source community that has been lovingly and painstakingly attended by the US Department of Defense and its particular initiative, Advanced Distributed Learning. xAPI is so successful that it’s actually becoming a challenge for ADL to support it to the scale it now demands. This is why open source was so crucial a path for xAPI.

The post written for ADL was pretty matter-of-fact. In its first year following xAPI’s release, innovative practitioners and teams began their experiments and proofs-of-concept with xAPI. Riptide Software is launching a new website linking success stories with xAPI (case studies) with open source tools that can help practitioners replicate those success stories in their companies. They’re getting the mailing list ready and will open registration by the end of May.

Aaron, can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you became involved with ADL? Two months after my layoff, a company called CTC recruited me to work for ADL. Any innovation that could shut down as many companies as SCORM did was something I wanted to master. I worked with ADL from 2003-2006 and participated in the Technical Working Group afterwards. This work informed the conversations with several current and former ADL friends.

That said, for a freebie -and yes, I said freebie (open source) it has a lot of power. To give you an example, the free version is ADL SCORM 2004 certified (many commercial paid ones are not). What I would do, if I wanted to use an authoring tool in my system, use a free open source one with strong functionality. There are plenty of vendors who are less than two years old, which is good – because they can look at the RCAT industry from another perspective and innovate. Ease of use is a better thing and innovation is an awesome thing.
