The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. The Department of Defense’s ADL initiative decided upon a version, to move things forward, and thus was born SCORM. When standards are well-written, they support a basis upon which innovation can flourish.

With Gratitude…

We innovated when we needed to and we stuck to tried and true processes when we needed to, too. It is proving that open government practices, a pro-entrepreneurial approach and an authentic embrace of open source can stimulate innovation, enable implemented approaches to complex and serious challenges, and catalyze economic opportunities. xAPI is so successful that it’s actually becoming a challenge for ADL to support it to the scale it now demands.

SCORM was developed with the intent of Web Based Training , in a controlled environment, and because of this struggles to work with mobile learning and new technologies. He has a passion for researching and sharing L&D topics, with a particular interest in learning strategy, mobile technology and anything innovative that changes the way we think about learning.

xAPI Shifting to 3rd Gear

MakingBetter

We had people well outside of the ADL bubble talking about real world things things they were using xAPI to accomplish. Participants got into the weeds of learning architecture, project management and scaling the technology to respond to growing organizational demands in near real-time. You go back to the bell curve model of Rogers’ Diffusions of Innovations theory. You might be surprised to find out we’re in 2nd gear. We shifted out of 1st gear at DevLearn last year.

xAPI, LRS – The Interview

eLearning 24-7

Aaron, can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you became involved with ADL? Two months after my layoff, a company called CTC recruited me to work for ADL. Any innovation that could shut down as many companies as SCORM did was something I wanted to master. I worked with ADL from 2003-2006 and participated in the Technical Working Group afterwards. I worked with business analysts, IT and communications teams on governance for these new technologies.

Getting contextual

Clark Quinn

For the current ADL webinar series on mobile, I gave a presentation on contextualizing mobile in the larger picture of L&D (a natural extension of my most recent books). The point is that you map the technology to the need, and infer the possibilities. They’re also useful for coaching & mentoring as well, as for problem-solving, innovating, and more.

Standards and success

Clark Quinn

While IMS & IEEE held meetings to get learning content standards nailed down, ADL just put their foot down with SCORM (and US Defense is a big foot), and it pretty much got everyone’s attention. There may be barriers for enterprise adoption, but as I frequently say: it’s not the technology, the barriers are between our ears (and maybe our pocketbooks :). When others can leverage, the greatest innovations can occur. Tags: mobile strategy technology

MakingBetter

In August, 2014 I participated in one of the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC) monthly meetings. If SCORM taught us anything, it was these two things: First, it taught us how to make real money in learning technology by formalizing how we commonly approach enterprise software; Second, it taught us how costly it is to not be mindful or deliberate about our choices, technical and political, at the specification and standards level.
