What’s next? Continued progress on products and upcoming events

Rustici Software

We’ve talked a lot about our upcoming feature releases mainly because we’re excited about all the significant development efforts we’re bringing to our products this year. We’ll be rolling out pre-built integrations in popular content libraries , reporting solutions to help you quickly add reports to your applications , and support for new media types that can be imported directly into Rustici Engine. Later this month, we’ll be attending and presenting at ADL’s iFest conference.

The ongoing work of learning standards

The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough. The ADL provided compliance testing, so that content and systems could be validated for interoperability. ADL decided to create a new standard, the Experience API (xAPI; originally known as Tin Can). Integrating a consistent mechanism for communication with a desire to track human activity is the underlying concept.

What is SCORM?

Origin Learning

It gives guidelines to programmers on how to write codes for e-learning products so that it can play well with other software. Before SCORM, content creation and integration was an immensely expensive affair. Easy integration and sharing across platforms protects infrastructure investments and lowers the cost of content ownership in present and future SCORM compliant systems.

I was sequestered in a conference room during Plugfest 9 with Philip Dodds, chief architect of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM™) and a few people on the ADL technical team. At the time, King was one of the leading people at Macromedia (soon to be Adobe) working on making integration with SCORM happen in products like Flash and Captivate. It was February 2005.

Bottom-Line Performance

ADL, or Advanced Distributive Learning , is the government agency behind the spec. One example given by ADL is a “bookmarklet” that can be installed on a web browser and be used to track informal activities such as web pages visited. Since Experience API does not need the LMS to report activity, content from Wikipedia, Youtube, TED Talks, Coursera, Kahn Academy and more can all be integrated into formal courses without a hitch. Tin Can. Experience. TIN CAN! Experience!

SCORM – Set of Standards that make Courses and LMS Compatible

Now that you know and have decided on getting a SCORM compliant LMS for your organization, how do you make sure if the product you’re getting is truly compliant. So, normally it is ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning – a research group) that handles all the aspects related to SCORM. They formally test the product, validate it and certify products as being SCORM compliant. However, it is not mandatory to go through the process via the ADL route only.

A Conversation with Reuben Tozman about Learning on Demand: Part One

Kapp Notes

Reuben received his Masters degree in Educational Technology from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, and has worked as an instructional designer, a project manager, consultant, and product manager within a variety of organizations. What comes out of this exploration is a very clear path towards designing ‘information’ so that it can be used within a technology framework that is integrated into our daily lives and has in fact become part of our own human evolution.

SCORM is a set of technical standards for e-Learning software products. Both SCORM and the Tin Can API were developed by the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), a research group sponsored by the DoD, with help from Rustici Software. As more LMS and authoring tool vendors offer Tin Can API integration, there will likely be a greater emphasis placed on designing learning experiences and not just learning objects in the form of traditional e-Learning.
