Consider the internet; developments on top of the TCP/IP protocol like SMTP and HTML allowed a variety of tools to work together to bring us email and the world wide web. The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant.

Mike: Early adopters are broken into two categories, traditional e-learning vendors and new market entrants. Traditional vendors are largely adopting at the SCORM parity level and using Tin Can as a better way to track formal training programs. Tracking should be opt-in when possible. How do you plan to address this?

In the training context, this means knowing and tracking everything the learner does, from reading training documents to watching webinars or training videos and attending mobile learning lessons. the Director of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative, aptly said, ‘xAPI is what helps us put the puzzle together’.

One of the most interesting items which presents to me an unknown variable is CMI-5, a compliance standard (formally with AICC) now headed up by ADL. Rather than go into a whole diatribe about CMI-5, I recommend you read this info on CMI-5 (put together in part from vendor RISC). For me, though, I will no longer. 6 Integrations.

ADL SCORM 2004 CERTIFIED. Sure, other vendors will say you can do that too, but you have to open each object file to get it. Many vendors hyping PowerPoint to Flash angle as key feature. 57% offer a trial at various length, this is significantly higher than any other e-learning tool with over 40 vendors in the market.

The rise of mLearning has also driven adoption of the Tin Can xAPI eLearning content standard which can track far more learning activities than older standards like SCORM. Any form of learning conducted on a computer and usually over the internet. SCORM defines how online learning content speaks to, and tracks results back to, an LMS.
