Track and trace Learners results. What do SCORM compliance, AICC, XAPI and CMI5 mean?

Challenge to Learn

Do you want to buy a LMS or an authoring tool and are you wondering what the best option is for tracking the results of your learners? SCORM is a standard in e-Learning that makes it possible to track and trace the results of your learners in a Learning Management system (LMS). A course is SCORM compliant when it meets the requirements of the standard set by the ADL. You upload the SCORM compliant course in your LMS and invite your learners.

Challenge to Learn

They do a project for the ADL to investigate what the next version of SCORM should look like. SCORM is the standard of the e-Learning industry and now and then we say less nice things about it, but it is our guarantee (most of the times) that content from our authoring systems will actually run in most LMS, and that the learners progress and results are tracked and reported. Today I was interviewed by Ben Clarck from Rustici software.

Experience (Tin Can) API: What to Expect from Your LMS Provider

Bottom-Line Performance

ADL, or Advanced Distributive Learning , is the government agency behind the spec. This works great, because the only learning interactions anyone has ever thought of hinge directly on how learners do on a post-test, right? Experience API brings us a number of improvements to take advantage of in L&D: It can track learner progress without a constant internet connection. It can track learner activity from a variety of informal activities. Tin Can. Experience.

We have been working with government entities since 2005, so it’s no surprise that we were at NTSA’s ADL iFest 2019 conference. While the xAPI standard and other emerging ADL initiatives are actively innovating exciting new standards, the reality is that training managers need tools that can be used to solve problems in the short term. Why the Experience API (xAPI) Is Crucial to Your eLearning Success

Trivantis

The Experience API (xAPI) is an updated standard for tracking eLearning; it shows a more complete picture of your learners’ activity than SCORM does. The ADL —or Advanced Distributed Learning—recognized the need for a set of standards to ensure that programmers write code that can play well with other eLearning software. Years later, when SCORM couldn’t do everything needed, the ADL asked Rustici Software to create an updated standard: The Experience API or xAPI.

xAPI: Why Should I Care and What Could It Do for Me?

Meridian

In the training world, we were introduced to SCORM from an initiative that arose in 1999, led by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). xAPI, like SCORM before it, started from a DoD and ADL 2011 initiative. Maybe you want to enable learners to better understand their choices, compared to others, or improve systems to better understand where mistakes are made. Perhaps getting learners to the training more easily is the problem.

Transitioning from SCORM to xAPI

Web Courseworks

I asked Andy Johnson of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative for his take on the issue as a leading expert in xAPI. For example, you may want to send a statement for each five seconds of video a learner watches (or, at the very least, has playing on the screen.) There is no good way of defining this learner interaction in a SCORM authoring tool.

Think xAPI is Next-Generation SCORM? Think Again

Talented Learning

Rewind briefly to a day in 2010, when the dew was still fresh and early morning sun filled the meeting room at Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). With SCORM, when learners enroll in an online course, the state of the enrollment/course is recorded as “not attempted.” At that point, the status changes to “completed” or “passed” or “failed” depending on how learners perform and how the course is configured to report outcomes.

You’re ready to get your elearning out to learners. It’s a type of website where elearning modules can be uploaded for learners to access them. If it’s not certified by ADL, which SCORM API elements are supported? ADL is the governing body for SCORM. For an LMS to be SCORM-certified, it needs to have passed ADL’s testing process. Others offer different ways of organizing and presenting your content so you can tailor your course creation to your learners.

eLearning Standards—What They Are and Why They Matter

Trivantis

The AICC was dissolved in 2014, and all of its efforts have been transferred to the Department of Defense’s (DOD) Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) group. In 1997, the DOD established the ADL Initiative to standardize and modernize training. In 2010, the ADL began research into a new eLearning standard that would allow much more flexibility, and it was given the codename Tin Can API.

How xAPI is Re-Shaping Modern Workplace Learning?

Origin Learning

It was originally a research project that was awarded to Rustici Software by ADL. Traditional learning management systems can only capture details of learner-activities within the LMS when the learner is connected to the system. To summarize, xAPI enables learning administrators to track offline learning or learning that the learner participates in outside the core LMS/learning platform like mobile apps or games.

How To Choose A SCORM Compliant LMS For Your e-Learning Content

Wizcabin

Apart from that, it also helps to track learners’ performance to know the completion rate of your course content. On the other hand, SCORM certified LMS ensures that a specific product under discussion gets certified by SCORM governing body, ADL. The first checklist to choose a SCORM compliant LMS is checking to know if the LMS gets supports from ADL. Ideally, there are three tiers of data model elements to provide learners with an optimized experience.

SCORM vs. LTI: what’s the difference?

Rustici Software

With LTI, a learner logs into an LMS (what is referred to as an “LTI tool consumer”) and typically selects a resource link to play a course. SCORM stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model and it was developed, and is now managed, by Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL) to support the Department of Defense. This file contains all the information needed by the LMS for it to import and launch (or play) the content without the learner doing a single thing.

Building the Next Generation of SCORM

Integrated Learnings

Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) is leading the effort for the next generation of SCORM. Existing SCORM specifications are limited to a single learner mindset. Content could be a mobile phone app that learners download from the App Store and report that "Mary earned the flight expert badge playing Jet Fighter X." This frees content authors to provide content in more modern ways to learners. by Jonathan Shoaf. Last Thursday was the kick off of project Tin Can.

SCORM – Set of Standards that make Courses and LMS Compatible

So, normally it is ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning – a research group) that handles all the aspects related to SCORM. However, it is not mandatory to go through the process via the ADL route only. Organizations are accepting it like never before and using it to deliver content to their learners/users. Because besides imparting learning, you also want to track the progress and performance of the learners. It gives a holistic view of a learner’s progress.

The Role of xAPI in Creating Powerful Learning Experiences for the Modern Workforce

Origin Learning

SCORM was not enough to track user/learner progress. There was an urgent requirement to devise a standard/solution that would help learning administrators monitor learner progress for learners accessing learning content on mobile devices. It was originally a research project that was awarded to Rustici Software by ADL. Traditional learning management systems can only capture details of learner-activities within the LMS when the learner is connected to the system.

DevLearn Thoughts: Is Game Based Learning Misunderstood?

Bottom-Line Performance

These elements can certainly motivate learners to keep going and make an experience more fun, but they are NOT a game! There’s no way to track learner activity in games, so I can’t use it. If an activity is happening outside of the LMS, learner activity could not be tracked. That means all of the activities, achievements, and milestones learners accomplish in a game can easily be tracked in an LMS… if you are Tin Can compliant.

Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) has the complete specification (all 400+ pages of it) readily available on their site, but I was looking for a quick, “get your hands dirty” explanation that skipped all the mumbo-jumbo and would let me dive in and start trying things out. The SCORM specification, developed by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL – [link] is a set of rules that learning management systems (LMS) and learning content follow in order to be compatible with each other.

LearnUpon

On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. Pitched as the “true next generation of SCORM”, ADL have taken over the cmi5 specification (which suggests it will evolve!). ADL provides an overview ( [link]. SCORM reports if a learner takes an online course assigned by a LMS , limiting the system to formal Web based training, whereas Tin Can records any type of activity statement. For well over a decade the Sharable Content Object Reference Model, or SCORM as it’s affectionately known, has been the standard for tracking eLearning.

Tin Can API: What It Has in Store for Online Learning Environments

ProProfs

In a traditional classroom-based teaching and learning environment, the only time you get to assess the knowledge of each learner is at the end of tests and examinations. This method is not conducive to the holistic development of learners as it doesn’t show the whole picture of the learning activity. Such data provides insights into the activities of each learner, for instance, the courses they took. The LRS Stores the learners’ data, allowing them to learn on the go.

This simulator, which included an electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) and a labor and delivery room, allows one to view and hear the learner via video embedded in sim (see pic below). Being able to view and hear the learner''s immediate reaction and feedback to the simulation was great as a course evaluation tool and can be a helpful in coaching the learner too.

Tin Can API, the evolution of SCORM

Paradiso

Originally developed by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), an initiative of the Unite States Department of Defense, SCORM was designed to standardize and modernize their training courses. It is a set of standards and specifications for developing web-based educational technology, standards developed by the ADL which had always to adhere strictly to SCROM’s requirements, these being “accessible, reusable, inoperable, and durable content and systems”.
