Webinar Q&A: Empowering Continuous Learning with the Experience API (xAPI)

Experience API

Questions: What is the common identifier that allows the xAPI to connect the data provided by the ‘activity provider’ to a specific user in the LRS? Answer: xAPI allows for learners to be identified by email address, Open ID or an account on some system, such as an LMS. How do you best see xAPI interfacing with an LMS? Which LMS platforms out there today best interface with xAPI? That’s one of the big advantages of xAPI, *anything* can make a statement.

Taking cmi5 adoption further by developing a Conformance Test Suite

Rustici Software

For the last 18 years, some of the most important work we’ve done at Rustici Software has been the standards-based efforts we’ve worked on with the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL). Over the years, our folks have participated in the working groups for, and the development of, standards as ubiquitous as SCORM, as forgotten as RTWS, and more recently xAPI.

MakingBetter

This post is for vendors, developers and implementers of the Experience API and for anyone who may one day create something with xAPI. The choices made soon will ultimately impact what you will be able to do with xAPI 3, 5 and 20 years from now. I’m going to ask you as vendors, entrepreneurs, developers, designers from all around the world to provide me with your counsel as I ultimately must direct the effort. Currently, adoption of xAPI is very LRS-centric.

You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. With the advent of Flash, many authoring tools started creating output that could be played by the Flash player, which meant you didn’t need special software to use the courses (if your IT org would support you having it). The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough. So, does xAPI replace SCORM? .

One of the most interesting items which presents to me an unknown variable is CMI-5, a compliance standard (formally with AICC) now headed up by ADL. Rather than go into a whole diatribe about CMI-5, I recommend you read this info on CMI-5 (put together in part from vendor RISC). Standard adoption takes time (as we can see with xAPI), so if you are concerned or worried about having to go with CMI-5, etc. 1 xAPI.
