What is the plan for DISC, xAPI, and ADL?

Towards the end of last year, our big announcement was the formation of the not-for-profit Consortium formed to handle the governance and address the evolution of xAPI with/for ADL. doesn’t require ADL’s permission for us to do this. All the same, ADL’s done an amazing job stewarding xAPI through its R&D roots to now and to whatever degree we can work in concert with ADL (and US DoD, by extension) it’s to our collective benefit to do so.

Once again we were excited to participate in NTSA’s ADL iFEST conference. While we always prefer to socialize in person between sessions, the NTSA and ADL created a virtual format that still allowed us to connect and engage with industry professionals.

Responding to recent ADL funding news

Experience API

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of weeks learning about some things that are happening with ADL (the governing body for SCORM and closest thing we currently have to a single steward for xAPI right now). Some funding things happened at ADL, but ADL will continue to do work on xAPI and with the xAPI community. ADL’s funding has been reduced substantially in the short-term. I think ADL’s done a great job of this over time.

By having an agreed upon protocol, things can work together, and others can build value-added services on top of them. The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough. The ADL provided compliance testing, so that content and systems could be validated for interoperability. ADL decided to create a new standard, the Experience API (xAPI; originally known as Tin Can).

Part One: How We Decide to Do Work

Experience API

A couple of days ago, I wrote about the state of ADL and Rustici Software’s take on it. ADL’s guiding hand. For most of the last 15 years, ADL has been the primary organizing force in the corporate elearning standards space. This force is realized in two ways: ADL funds research of a specific type, with specific organizations, which causes things to happen to the eLearning standards. This money from ADL provided incentive, and ADL’s guidance provided direction.

LETSI/SCORM 2.0 Wrap Up and Thanks!

Mark Oehlert

It doesn't tell me if the efforts will be successful -I think that a large part of that success will depend on how well LETSI can research, evaluate and leverage existing work being done in terms of SOAs, Web services and so on.and how fast LETSI can move.and how the market reacts to LETSI's biz model. So I spent most of last week at the LETSI / SCORM 2.0 Workshop in Pensacola, FL. I used CoverItLive to do a running set of notes of the workshop and that's available here.

Experience API

An LRS implementation is an application that can either be a premised web service or a remotely hosted (public- or non-public web service). We had people well outside of the ADL bubble talking about real world things things they were using xAPI to accomplish. Given their engineering culture, given their fanatical attention to customer service, given their massive supply chain and the people power it takes to make all of those parts work in harmony, xAPI could not have a better stakeholder. You might be surprised to find out we’re in 2nd gear. We shifted out of 1st gear at DevLearn last year.
