CMI-5 and XAPI (Tin Can API), Bill McDonald , Kris Rockwell It took me a while to figure the meaning of TinCan and I understood the impact it can have on our learning community, but I never understood why we have two competing standards (Scorm and AICC), and now there is a new standard emerging CMI-5 based on TinCan. Later on the ADL was formed and they wanted a more extended standard, based on the AICC specs. Both the ADL and AICC where working on a new generation of standards.

Profile Recipes vs. xAPI Profiles

Experience API

What’s the difference between profile recipes and xAPI profiles? A “ profile recipe ” was an early attempt to make it possible for members of the xAPI community to publicly share how they were implementing an information model for a given experience in the hopes that others with a similar experience could use the same model. This is the primary difference between the two, with “xapi-authored-profiles” being more technical. xAPI Profiles.

Why the Experience API (xAPI) Is Crucial to Your eLearning Success

Trivantis

The Experience API (xAPI) is an updated standard for tracking eLearning; it shows a more complete picture of your learners’ activity than SCORM does. xAPI was created by Rustici Software to replace SCORM (an earlier set of technical standards for eLearning software products).

Traditional vendors are largely adopting at the SCORM parity level and using Tin Can as a better way to track formal training programs. I think we mostly know how to track informal learning with Tin Can now, but there is still a long way to go in making useful information out of all that data. Tracking should be opt-in when possible. When asking a question about compliance training, we will outfit the compliance violation tracking system to notify us when violations occur.
