What is the plan for DISC, xAPI, and ADL?

MakingBetter

Towards the end of last year, our big announcement was the formation of the not-for-profit Consortium formed to handle the governance and address the evolution of xAPI with/for ADL. xAPI, being open-source and licensed as Apache 2.0, doesn’t require ADL’s permission for us to do this. That’s a feature, not a bug — we licensed xAPI in this way so that it couldn’t be trapped in US DoD the way SCORM was. ADL’s announcement about our collaboration can be found here.

Responding to recent ADL funding news

Experience API

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of weeks learning about some things that are happening with ADL (the governing body for SCORM and closest thing we currently have to a single steward for xAPI right now). Some funding things happened at ADL, but ADL will continue to do work on xAPI and with the xAPI community. SCORM and xAPI are both still just fine. ADL’s funding has been reduced substantially in the short-term.

ADL created a community with their xAPI cohorts and we’re aiming to do the same with our Spring 2016 xAPI Learning Cohort. We got our feet wet with a mini xAPI Learning Cohort in 2015, and now we’re ready to take the plunge by opening up this learning experience to everyone.

Last year, ADL began organizing Communities of Practice around the design considerations and implementation of xAPI in different contexts. There are many ways xAPI can be applied — how one designs and develops best really depends on the use case. Yesterday, Ben Betts announced his leadership of a Badges Community of Practice , and I was both surprised and elated to see all the different groups coordinating with ADL.

Profile Recipes vs. xAPI Profiles

Experience API

What’s the difference between profile recipes and xAPI profiles? A “ profile recipe ” was an early attempt to make it possible for members of the xAPI community to publicly share how they were implementing an information model for a given experience in the hopes that others with a similar experience could use the same model. This is the primary difference between the two, with “xapi-authored-profiles” being more technical. xAPI Profiles.

Experience API

The latest DoDI advises all entities within the DoD to procure eLearning technology solutions that are compliant with the SCORM or Experience API (xAPI) specifications. After xAPI was released in 2013, it was hard for government organizations to purchase modern products as xAPI was not supported by the existing Instruction and there was no way to verify if an xAPI solution conformed to the specification. So how can I find an xAPI compliant product?
