I thought I'd kick off this year by posting a series of posts on topics related to tools and methods for work and learning. What are the most important methods to adopt in addition to the tools? Setting up a SharePoint for a community or work team is very different from teaching them about Personal Learning. Yet innovative pedagogy in higher education is not prevalent, and academics are generally reluctant to change their methods. The lecture in a tiered amphitheatre to large groups of students remains the norm, and undergraduates are expected to learn mainly by listening and reading, before sitting examinations or writing lengthy essays to test their knowledge. I realized back in the late-1990s that PowerPoint had the potential to be an effective authoring tool. The best method I have found is if you can draw a person in with a demonstration and show them that learning is occurring. Remind them that the visual cues of games, the need to think quickly, the immersive qualities all create an effective learning environment. The same sort of thing happened when factories were automated and when knowledge work became automated.
