Lurking is Not a Static State

ID Reflections

At this point, I also "serendipitous-ly" stumbled upon a couple of conversations recently that touched upon lurking (this is why I love social media). Active lurkers also include those who will contact the original poster through a different channel, like telephone, email, or perhaps a face to face meeting – in effect continuing the conversation outside of the visible public side of the community, but not outside of the community itself.

Success Formula for Discussion Forums in Financial Services

Tony Karrer

I received a question this week related to Discussion Forums for Knowledge Sharing at Capital City Bank : I successfully launched a discussion forum for a small group of lending assistants within my bank. Learning and KM: Separated at birth?

Jay Cross

I sensed that learning and knowledge management were converging and invited bloggers form both sides to get together at the Tidehouse to share viewpoints and guzzle beer. A social media consumer, HBS professor, MIT research scientist, and author, McAfee focuses on how emergent social software platforms are benefiting enterprises, and how smart organizations and their leaders are making effective use of them to share knowledge, inspire innovation, and enable decision making.

SMBs and Social Learning Technologies

Janet Clarey

SMBs & Social Media (Sum Total). Other notes: Definition of social media vary among attendees (~160). Noted main difference between main stream media and social media. Social media enables everyone to publish/access info inexpensively. Where we are today: Primary forms of social learning technologies used in corporations today appear to be e-mail, live online learning (Web conferencing), threaded discussion, and collaborative content development.
