HTML5. Listen you love flash. You can’t live without it – but unless you want to be able to only see your courses on tablets that only support flash (and they all also support HTML5) or have zero desire to see your courses on the iPads (which support only HTML5), you will need to face reality. In 2012, I’ve seen a slow uptake with tools that can output to HTML5.

Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Flash output – still red hot. The latter is slowly gaining speed, which is an advantage to LMS vendors who have a CAT in their own product – which is SCORM,PENS/IMS compliant. Will it attain mass adoption – I doubt it. HTML5. Flash isn’t going anywhere, except maybe the route of leaded gasoline. Vendor adoption is slow.

Those that enter this space will truly be cutting edge and thus adoption will be slow. HTML5 support – sorry Flash fans . no SCORM, AICC or PENS – however, I am now seeing a few vendors offer PENS (created by AICC back in 2005, but slowly gaining traction). Claro enables true HTML5 output. Every year, I identify five trends that I am seeing in the industry as a whole, and forecast on where they will be heading throughout the year.
