This continues the discussion being had around PLE/PWLEs - see More Discussion on Personal Work Learning Environments for a bit of recap. Tom Haskins has a series of interesting posts - on the topic: Enterprises that love PLE's Traits for creating PLE's at work The P in PLE First, I have to jump on the comments in these posts by Stephen Downes and Michelle Martin. Social Networking: Surveying Learner Participant TechnoProfile I have been fine-tuning a survey tool to gauge the T echnoProfile of the target learning audience in social learning, networking, collaboration and Learning 2.0 environments. Personal Learning Knowledge Work Environment

Tony Karrer

adoption is getting folks to manage their personal knowledge and adopt practices like blogging for personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal learning. What this has come to make me realize is that for the vast majority of knowledge workers (including myself), there should be no separation between my Personal Learning Environment (PLE), my Personal Knowledge Management system, and my day-to-day set of tools that enhance my knowledge worker productivity.

What are the most important methods to adopt in addition to the tools? Thus, whenever I say you "should" be using this tool, I really mean you should try this tool out and consider adopting it. You need to understand your choices, try new methods and tools and adopting practices that improve your work and learning skills.

Enterprises that love PLE's Cross battles Downes: is corporate learning corrupt? if people will adopt these tools and approaches over time, then as a corporation, if you want to be able to keep the content after an employee leaves, especially blog content. then shouldn't you make sure you provide these tools now rather than having tools adopted that are outside the firewall and personally owned where you will lose the content if the employee leaves

Horizontal Learning

Tony Karrer

Call them Personal Learning Environments (PLE) if you want but the key issue here is that they are based on user-centric design. However, knowledge workers and learners are adopting other work and learning techniques and tools because they support knowledge work and learning AND because they are incredibly easy to use, thus, the adoption hurdle is low (see Adoption of Web 2.0 Interesting post. Blogging Inside or Outside the Corporate Firewall

Tony Karrer

What is it about people in corporate learning that they feel the need to perpetuate the attitude of servitude it seems all learners must adopt. It was interesting to read this because when I was writing about a PLE really also supporting my work - I didn't think of it in the context of ownership of the work product. Stephen's very much correct about a PLE being for the person.
