On March 1, 2011, IBM announced the IBM SmartCloud framework to support Smarter Planet.” What will emerge is a network of diverse and connected workers skilled at PKM learning together to develop skills they can apply to their work. Smaller organizations are emerging along with a movement toward generative business models where businesses build an ecosystem of mutually supportive relationships. The role of the CLO will be to drive this change NOW!

Uberizing Organizational Learning – Thinking Beyond Courses

We have to think agile, instant, accessible, contextual, micro-sized, real time… We need to uberize organizational learning. Agility and pull lie at the heart of uberization. And what role does L&D play in the process? Against this backdrop, technology is providing us with an opportunity to re-imagine and redefine workplace learning and our role as business partners, thought leaders, and change agents. This calls for the acquisition of new skills and roles in the team to meet the changing needs of a demographically diverse workforce. This necessitates individuals to practice Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) and build their Personal Learning Networks (PLN).

While the organizational culture plays a huge role, the embedded collective social psyche/unconscious is also responsible to some extent for employee behaviour. In such context, it becomes even more imperative to create an organizational culture that is safe, open, and supportive of its employees. This implies taking on quite a few challenges and tasks that may not be within the current purview of one''s L&D roles/tasks.

This is leading to a shift in the role of the L&D department – from managers and disseminators of formally designed programs to facilitators and enablers of collaboration and communities. When fully realized and supported, emergent learning provides autonomy, mastery and purpose to learners and agility, adaptability and resilience to organizations. They are ill-equipped to support a world that revolves around the uniqueness of the human brain.
