It’s hard to believe how far technology has come in the last 20 years, like how playing Nokia Snake was the coolest thing to do. Much like the games on your phone, your learning ecosystem looks a little different today than it did back then. And so does Rustici Engine.

In 2005, we introduced Engine (who remembers when it was SCORM Engine?) as an integratable software solution to help LMSs tackle the challenge of importing, launching and tracking SCORM and AICC content. Over the years, Engine kept pace with the evolution of the eLearning standards, adding support for SCORM 2004 (2nd, 3rd, and 4th editions), AICC, xAPI, cmi5 and LTI 1.1 and 1.3. Two years ago, we took a leap forward by providing more than just eLearning standards support. Your customers can import, play and track more types of content, like media files, URLs and content directly integrated from third parties.

Let’s take a closer look at how our team is constantly updating and improving Engine to meet the ever-changing learning landscape.

Support for all of the learning standards

We are always improving Engine by supporting new and emerging standards as our industry evolves. Our most recent learning standards evolutions in Engine are with cmi5 and LTI.

cmi5 is the newest eLearning specification. It was officially released for production use in 2016 to complement xAPI (Experience API) and is still evolving today with cmi5 CATAPULT. In Engine 21.1, we added the ability to dispatch SCORM, AICC and LTI content as cmi5. Catch up on cmi5 with this handy overview article for an in-depth explanation of the standard and links to active projects and resources.

We’ve been making LTI improvements to Engine since 2018, most recently including the ability to import LTI 1.1 and 1.3 tools in our 20.1 release.

Content Connectors

Offer thousands of content titles through your LMS to eliminate the need for customers to spend time manually uploading content with one of our Content Connector integrations.

A Content Connector is an integration that gives your customers access to a large content library through Engine. Customers can search, import, play and track the content you offer with the add-on. The integration gives you access to an ever-expanding catalog of content and reduces the need to build custom integrations.

We currently offer the Go1 Content Hub as a Content Connector, which includes over 100,000 professional learning titles. Their growing library has doubled since the connector was released in 2019. If you are interested in adding the premium Go1 connector, reach out to us to get started.

Media Support

Rustici Engine supports delivery and tracking for MP4, MP3, and PDF file uploads with additional support for subtitles and closed captioning for MP4s. Your customers can track duration and completion data for media files, allowing them to get the learner data they need with both standard and non-standard content types. Speaking of video support, Engine also has several types of connections for YouTube and Vimeo, including the ability to deliver and track YouTube-hosted videos and Vimeo videos.

Trackable URL Support

Your customers can see the learners who are opening URL-based resources with URL support. Now, understanding who opened and looked at a SharePoint file, an online survey tool, a knowledge base post or an intranet asset is as easy as sharing the link.
