The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. Authorware usage and fan base made Storyline supporters and usage look like a rock stage at a state fair. There are even fans today of Authorware, who if it was still around, would bounce right into it. Other course authoring tools started to appear right after Authorware.

Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. For more interactive elements, I used Flash and imported the SWFs into Authorware. These courses can be published as SCORM or AICC compliant courses. Over the years, I have used ToolBook, Trainersoft, and even Dreamweaver with Coursebuilder.

You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). Learning Standards.

The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. Other fun tidbits AICC was the leader here, then came SCORM. Instructional design was actually being used.

To make things worse we also had competitive standards (Scorm and AICC). He fights against boring and bad eLearning and does that in a very constructive way. He wrote a ton of books, all of them are classics and must reads. For more than a decade eLearning was confined in the bounderies of your LMS. Aaron is the guy that changed all that.

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. SCORM compliance and/or AICC – there are tools out there who support neither – but that is not the norm and there are a few tools out there who also support PENS.
