Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. PENS was created in 2005 by AICC as a new interoperability standard. Same issue if your product outputs to only AICC, and my LMS vendor does not accept the AICC interoperability standard. As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit.

Using Silverlight/Expression Blend for eLearning Development

Upside Learning

Over the last ten years or so, major elearning developers have preferred to use tools like Flash, Authorware and Director from Adobe (earlier Macromedia). To be able to host the courses hosted on the LMS, the elearning content should comply with standards guidelines published by SCORM, AICC or custom compliance conventions which the LMS in question supports. Development Tools - Should I Cut Out the Middle Guy?

Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. For more interactive elements, I used Flash and imported the SWFs into Authorware. I really prefer the robust ability of creating courses in Flash and only use the DHTML e-learning authoring tools for their ability to make the course SCORM or AICC compliant. These courses can be published as SCORM or AICC compliant courses.

The ongoing work of learning standards

You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves.

Challenge to Learn

Michael Allen is also someone who is around for a long time, but as with Jay he doesn’t stick to his old ideas, he is an innovator and a driver for change from the very first start of his carreer (he was the man behind the very first authoring tool ‘Authorware’ ) Michael is also one of the leading instructional designers in the world. To make things worse we also had competitive standards (Scorm and AICC). Recently I was doing a presentation on eLearning trends.

How to select the right authoring tool

While I have seen a few that give off the “rapid build” appearance, unless you have experience with solutions in the past like Authorware, MacroMedia Director, or similar brethren, you will face some serious challenges. – Asthetics within the tool are underwhelming, but can output amazing – Best known of these tools was Authorware; This is a tool geared for e-learning developers and those who have a strong ID background. .

Course Authoring Tools for eLearning Developers and the masses

eLearning 24-7

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. SCORM compliance and/or AICC – there are tools out there who support neither – but that is not the norm and there are a few tools out there who also support PENS. I love the ribbon style approach, the custom branding angle with your player, audio and video narration, SCORM/AICC – perfect for the masses.

Accepts any courses built in any content authoring tools that are SCORM & AICC compliant – so you can upload and sell your courses that you built in Articulate, Captivate, even open source authoring tools (but they must be standards compliant). Reminds me of the days of Authorware, but with less complexity and anger, plus with more features and usefulness for the developer. I love innovation. It is what makes any product or service, aspire to new heights.
