Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development

Its obvious that the authorware decison was a tough one for adobe. Because of you, the Authorware community, they are looking into putting some engineering effort into updating the runtime for IE7 and Vista support. Flex is great to some of what Authorware did for you too.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. PENS was created in 2005 by AICC as a new interoperability standard. Same issue if your product outputs to only AICC, and my LMS vendor does not accept the AICC interoperability standard. As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit.

Development Tools - Should I Cut Out the Middle Guy?

eLearning Cyclops

Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. For more interactive elements, I used Flash and imported the SWFs into Authorware. I really prefer the robust ability of creating courses in Flash and only use the DHTML e-learning authoring tools for their ability to make the course SCORM or AICC compliant. These courses can be published as SCORM or AICC compliant courses.

Challenge to Learn

To make things worse we also had competitive standards (Scorm and AICC). Recently I was doing a presentation on eLearning trends. During that presentation I realized that there are just a handful of people driving fundamental change in eLearning.

How to select the right authoring tool

While I have seen a few that give off the “rapid build” appearance, unless you have experience with solutions in the past like Authorware, MacroMedia Director, or similar brethren, you will face some serious challenges. – Asthetics within the tool are underwhelming, but can output amazing – Best known of these tools was Authorware; This is a tool geared for e-learning developers and those who have a strong ID background. .

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. Tools these days come in three flavors. Geared toward e-learning developers and instructional designers. Geared towards the masses.

The ongoing work of learning standards

You could use any of the many authoring tools, such as Authorware, but you needed an appropriate player. Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC).

E-Learning Innovative Products – They are Out There

Accepts any courses built in any content authoring tools that are SCORM & AICC compliant – so you can upload and sell your courses that you built in Articulate, Captivate, even open source authoring tools (but they must be standards compliant). Reminds me of the days of Authorware, but with less complexity and anger, plus with more features and usefulness for the developer. I love innovation. It is what makes any product or service, aspire to new heights.
