Selecting a Learning “Operations” System for your Training Business

Selecting a Learning “Operations” System for your Training Business. My goal with this post is to provide a list of considerations when choosing a Learning Management System (LMS) for your Training Business. I’m emphasizing Training Business on purpose. Based on the business nature of this solution, it is truly a learning “operations” system. I take a look at these business challenges and how they should be handled by your learning management system here.

What is a Learning Management System? (2019 Update)

A Learning Platform empowers L&D departments to drive business growth through their efforts, and a key pillar of this solution is the Learning Management System (LMS). There are many benefits and advantages to both businesses and their learners when implementing an LMS. Content Integration and Interoperability: Learning management systems should support learning content packaged according to interoperable standards such as SCORM, AICC and xAPI (formerly Tin Can).

For instance, you could track only certain details such as who took your course, when they took the course and what was their score. Instead of looking at learning data as a bunch of numbers of who took the course and how much they scored, Tin Can would focus on learning experiences. 1998: The AICC came up with the Web-based Training (WBT) guidelines for interoperability of eLearning content on the Web. Test SCORM Courses with an LMS

Tony Karrer

We are developing a SCORM or AICC compliant course either custom or using an authoring tool. And we run into the same tough situation each time: If there's an integration issue, like the score or completion is not getting set appropriately, we want to be able to make changes to the course to try to fix it. The client's staff is too busy to run a series of tests and they have no patience for problems. Do any LMS vendors provide test beds for people to test their course?

The ongoing work of learning standards

Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant. Vendors got on board, and SCORM became a more-or-less viable mechanism. And we want to know whether or how well someone did for critical business skills.

Five Myths of Social Learning

Leading social media vendors like Jive Software are integrating with the top ECM platforms to provide unified search, workflow, and storage of enterprise and social content, proving a cohesive environment where formal content is supported by an ecosystem of users that contribute expertise and relevant information. While many learning vendors have thrown their hat into the Web 2.0 This is why we are seeing LMS vendors merge social media tools into their platforms.

Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer

SCORM is a fairly easy standard to deal with especially since most people are fine with a single SCO that does only single score/completion reporting. AICC goes after the same thing as what I've described above for SCORM (tracking under an LMS). Note: ARIADNE, AICC, IEEE LTSC, and IMS all participate in ADL's work on SCORM). So, when I've been consulting with vendors who are working on any kind of authoring system, that was a particularly interesting standard.
