How to select the right authoring tool

In the authoring tool world: PowerPoint focused authoring tool, Basically you know PPT, love it and want the ability to build within it and then convert your PPT to a Course. In the AT world, knowing whether your AT accepts your specific compliance standard (SCORM, SCORM 1.2/2004, AICC, PENS, TinCan) would be equally relevant. Nor would I select a tool that is really a PowerPoint converter.

Some people might convert their PPT to a video (it can be done) OR they have that production facility and shoot their own high quality videos OR they purchase 3rd party content video courses. SCORM 2004 3rd edition, SCORM 2004 4th edition (rarely used), AICC, PENS – all of which are compliance standards, each with strengths and minuses. . As you are aware I am not a fan of AICC – useful in early 2000’s, but IMO not that useful today.

Also SCORM 1.2 & AICC. Import and convert PPT to the web, add rich media. Same thing with PENS i.e. a SCORM LMS that does not support PENS will not work with a PENS content authoring tool. The end of the year is here, okay in just a few short weeks, but for those on vacation, the festivities have already began. In 2010, the RCAT market continued its upswing and nothing indicates to me it will be changing anytime soon.
