Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). ADL decided to create a new standard, the Experience API (xAPI; originally known as Tin Can). So, does xAPI replace SCORM? . Something more was needed.

xAPI was a glimmer in the eye of ADL, Rustici and in particular Ben Clark, who was spearheading Project Tin Can development. But the vast majority of our corporate and government customers relied solely on SCORM to make things just work together, with AICC frequently showing up. SCORM 2004 and AICC.

eLearning past: AICC. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. That’s also evident from the fact that the AICC specification hasn’t been updated in over ten years.

The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. Other initiatives include xAPI, sponsored by ADL to address gaps in SCORM.
