eLearning Standards 101: SCORM, AICC, xAPI, cmi5, And IMS Cartridge

Dan Keckan

If you’ve ever had something to do with eLearning, you’ve surely come across such notions as SCORM, AICC, or xAPI. This article will break down every single one of these acronyms, explain how they came about, and what they do. This post was first published on eLearning Industry.

Day 5: xAPI and more – what next for SCORM?

LearnUpon

eLearning past: AICC. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. While many eLearning vendors still support AICC, the standard is usually a legacy of older platforms and businesses. Organizations that implement AICC have typically been around for a while and began using it when it was still common.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). And then the IMS (an initiative of Educause before being spun out as an independent effort) started creating standards, as did the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the major body in the US responsible for computing standards. So, does xAPI replace SCORM? .

Distribute courses to LTI LMSs with Content Controller v2.1

SCORM 2004, AICC, and xAPI-based “Tin Can” packages, as well as custom content using our Rustici Cross Domain API (we called it SDXD at the time). SCORM 2004, or AICC. As of Content Controller v2.1 , you can also share your content as an IMS LTI tool provider. If you want to create your content using all the neat features and xAPI-based results tracking available in, say, cmi5, you can still make it available in an LMS that only supports SCORM 1.2.

The CMI5 is a profile for blending the xAPI specification with the learning management system. It involves a set of rules for xAPI which narrow the ‘umbrella’ or extensive specification to enhance its adoption rate in the industry.

Real (e)Learning Heroes

The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. Other initiatives include xAPI, sponsored by ADL to address gaps in SCORM. While there are people who claim to be leaders in elearning (and some are), there is another whole group who flies under the radar.

SCORM vs. LTI: what’s the difference?

Rustici Software

If you’ve been familiar with Rustici Software for a long time, you’ll know we’ve helped people for a long time with SCORM and xAPI. It stands for Learning Tools Interoperability and it is a standard created by the IMS Global Learning Consortium. Governance: LTI is created and maintained by IMS; SCORM by ADL.

The Ultimate Glossary of eLearning Terms

From Agile to xAPI and everything in between, there are a lot of eLearning terms to get your head around. Notable contributions include SCORM and xAPI. The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard. A predecessor to SCORM, AICC was difficult to work with and many steps were required to get content in the format running in a learning management system (LMS). xAPI (Tin Can).
