Package & track elearning: why companies need both AICC & xAPI

Docebo

AICC and xAPI (Experience API, or formerly Tin Can) are among the most important standards: whilst AICC has been around for a while, the xAPI is relatively recent. AICC is a well known industry standard: it was born in 1989 and it has had broad acceptance in the last year. So why is AICC still important for elearning adopters? AICC: the reasons behind its long shelf life. There are two good reasons behind the long-lasting success of AICC.

It is for Vendors like easygenerator or other authoring tools to come up with simple and useful applications of the XAPI. It comes from the aviation industry and it is called AICC. But it is mainly used in the Aviation industry and some technical industries. The good news is that both Scorm and AICC will merge into CMI5 , the new XAPI based standard.

State of the E-Learning Industry 2019

eLearning 24-7

Normally, folks write up a state of the industry at the end of that year (as I did for 2017). And thus, comes the State of the E-Learning industry as rumble forward with 2019. Change of messaging, and the seemingly misunderstanding by vendors that there is a difference between training and L&D. CMI-5 increased interest among vendors, even more so, than on/off synch mobile apps for example. LRSs not being utilized by vendors who have it in their systems.

AICC and SCORM Compliance: The Benefits for Your e-Learning

The Benefits of Making Your e-Learning AICC and SCORM Compliant . In the late 1990s, each learning management system had its own proprietary content format, which encouraged vendor lock-in. You had to use that vendor’s tools to create e-Learning that worked with that LMS, or your content wouldn’t play. The lab combined the work of existing standards organizations like the AICC , IMS and the IEEE LTSC into a cohesive reference model. SCORM versus AICC.

This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. If a RCAT vendor tells you they have been in business for over 10 years, they are somewhat misleading, since WBT courses really didn’t start to hit the mark until 2000 and then you have limited choices on how to build. Let’s be blunt – the growth of RCATs are a result of multiple factors: A growing audience new to the industry who lack tech skills. Industry.

5 E-Learning Forecasts for 2012

Every year, I identify five trends that I am seeing in the industry as a whole, and forecast on where they will be heading throughout the year. They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. Expect a few commercial vendors to jump into the augmented reality space for e-learning.

What makes this type of course design unique isn’t that it has been around for more than dozen of years, but that there are vendors who portray themselves whether intentionally or not, as “THE” micro-learning platform.

There are more vendors who do not offer the ability to post – i.e. add audio afterwards it is quite amazing. Again, simple and yet again arguably with many vendors difficult to do. There are dozens of free audio plugins available on the net, so why aren’t screen capturing/recording vendors offering the ability for the end user to add them? Another issue I have with many vendors who offer effects – again, I like that – is that they fail to mention.

eLearning Standards—What They Are and Why They Matter

Trivantis

To accomplish this, the industry has come up with several eLearning standards that allow courses created by any vendor to “talk” with an LMS created by any other vendor. It all started with the Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee (AICC), which was formed in 1988. In 1993, the AICC created the CMI specification—still in use today—which specified the communications between a course and an LMS.

It's a progression of the industry toward more, toward faster, and toward better.  Now LMS providers are adding integrated xAPI capability as well, alongside their existing SCORM and AICC support.

eLearning past: AICC. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. While many eLearning vendors still support AICC, the standard is usually a legacy of older platforms and businesses. That’s also evident from the fact that the AICC specification hasn’t been updated in over ten years.

The ongoing work of learning standards

Litmos

Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant. Vendors got on board, and SCORM became a more-or-less viable mechanism.

SCORM the trailblazer: SCORM revolutionized the eLearning industry because content developers, instructional designers and courseware administrators could freely use any LMS to create training programs , without having to worry about data interoperability. To achieve this, the industry used a new technology called CBT to train its employees. 1998: The AICC came up with the Web-based Training (WBT) guidelines for interoperability of eLearning content on the Web.
