I wouldn’t call it pondering rather I would call it a huge misnomer in the entire authoring tool industry, course development industry – with vendors here – when it comes to course standards. I’ve even seen it with LMS vendors. I still see course libraries that are only AICC. Here is my take.

The spin is that you can accrue points by reading an article, taking a course, leaving comments, ranking content, completing an assessment and so on – varies among vendors. but in the e-learning world. E-Learning – Despite some assumptions that it means electronic learning, it actually does not.

SCORM compliance and/or AICC – there are tools out there who support neither – but that is not the norm and there are a few tools out there who also support PENS. Multiple learning paths or branching. and SCORM support and learning objects. The authoring tool vendors will say their products are for everyone.

The LEP space is now the 2nd largest segment in the learning system space (LMSs are still first). One area I am seeing trend wise are learning environment and administrative features starting to mimic LMSs (not 100% in some cases, but pretty close). . Machine Learning (AI). You want this one, and most systems allow it.

Considering the growth of authoring tools, learning platforms, even mobile platforms jumping into the assessment tool space with equal performance, it just seems to be moving down the opposite side of the bell curve. Again, you can find them in most learning systems and even some authoring tools. Collaborative Learning Systems.

Bewildered on what is happening, why what is needed isn’t appearing as it should, and how is it possible that something so obvious based on where e-learning is heading, mobile is pushing and future tech is inspiring is lost among so many vendors? And therein lies one of the issues, that is showing up with many, many vendors.
